Last week we hosted our very first in person Better Letters Training in California. And wow, did you teach us a thing or two.

Here is what you showed us:

1. Six hours is the sweet spot. A full training day it is.
2. Literacy concepts need clearer, more concrete definitions.
3. Activities need to be simpler and more step by step.
4. We need to pack more kits. A lot more kits.

Every piece of feedback is going straight into the next version. We are building what we believe will be the best literacy training out there for SLPs, educators, and interventionists. No shortcuts. No fluff. Just the science, the tools, and the real world application you need to walk into your next session ready to teach.

There is a reason we named it Better Letters. Better for your students. Better for your sessions. Better for the way literacy instruction should have been all along.

3 mistakes you might be making in your literacy sessions. And they are easier to fix than you think.
Mistake #1: You’re doing phonemic awareness without letters. If students are only working with sounds orally, they’re missing the connection to print. Add letters to your phonemic awareness activities. The research is clear that tying sounds to graphemes accelerates reading and spelling.
Mistake #2: Your team isn’t using the same keywords. If the SLP says “blend,” the tutor says “push together,” and the teacher says “sound it out” the student has to decode the adults before they can decode the words. Collaborate with your team and commit to consistent language.
Mistake #3: You’re not practicing spelling enough. Reading and spelling are two sides of the same coin. If your sessions are heavy on decoding but light on encoding, your students are only getting half the practice. Spelling forces the phonemic awareness skill of segmenting and is great reinforcement practice!

Your speech kids are at risk for reading struggles and most SLPs were never trained to address it. This Friday we’re doing something about that.
