Spelling actually makes sense once you know what to look for.
Compare:

hopping
One tiny letter completely changes the word.
When we add a vowel suffix like -ing, -ed, or -er, English spelling has to protect the vowel sound.
If we don’t double the consonant, the syllable opens and the vowel says its long sound, hoping.
When we double it, the vowel stays short, hopping.
So the extra “p” isn’t random, it has a job. This is the doubling rule, and it’s one of the three great spelling rules!
