Equine herpesvirus (EHV) is a family of equine viruses named by numbers including EHV-1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 with EHV-1,3,4 posing the most risk for domestic horses. EHV is a common DNA virus that occurs in horse populations worldwide. The two most common species are EHV-1 and EHV-4.

What is Equine Herpesvirus (EHV)?

You've probably heard it called Rhinopneumonitis, a respiratory tract disease that results in "snotty noses," but EHV is more than that. Depending on the strain, this virus can also cause abortion in broodmares, and equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) β€” the often-deadly neurologic form of the disease.

Because EHV is endemic in many equine populations, most mature horses have developed some immunity through repeated natural infection. However, they remain a source of infection for other susceptible horses, like weaned foals and yearlings, who usually display symptoms of the respiratory form of the disease in autumn and winter. Performance and show horses are also more vulnerable to the disease, as they commingle with unfamiliar equines in close quarters while under stress from travel and competition.

Proper biosecurity protocols can help reduce EHV outbreaks and other disease transmission. A variety of vaccines are also available for protection against both the respiratory and abortive form of the disease, but there is no equine licensed vaccine at this time that has a label claim for protection against the neurologic form (EHM).

Consult your primary equine veterinarian to learn more about this disease and work with them to determine the optimal vaccine protocol for your horses.

You can learn more about all three forms on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website here: https://equinediseasecc.org/infectious-diseases

New puppy or kitten in your life and forgot what the vaccine schedule is!?
Or haven't had to go through this series before!? πŸˆπŸ•

No worries! We are here to help!

A typical puppy vaccine schedule begins around 6-8 weeks of age with the first core vaccines, followed by boosters every 2-4 weeks until 16 weeks.
This includes core shots like DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus), and later the Rabies vaccine is often given between 12-16 weeks.
Lifestyle vaccines, such as Bordetella and Lyme, are given based on your puppy's risk of exposure. 🐢🐾

A typical kitten vaccine schedule begins around 6-8 weeks of age with core vaccines like FVRCP, which is repeated every 3-4 weeks until 16-20 weeks of age. The FeLV vaccine is also highly recommended for kittens. A Rabies vaccine is given around 14-16 weeks. The schedule continues with boosters at one year of age. 🐈🐾

Navicular Syndrome: What Horse Owners Should Know

What is it?
Navicular syndrome is a common cause of long-term (usually front) foot pain in horses. It affects the structures in the back half of the hoof, including the navicular bone, deep digital flexor tendon, navicular bursa, collateral sesamoidean ligament, and collateral sesamoidean impar ligament).

Who gets it?
It's most often seen in adult horses, especially those used for heavy work or certain breeds like Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, and Warmbloods. Horses with very steep or very low hoof angles are also more at risk.

What are the signs?
β€’ Lameness, usually in the front feet
β€’ Horse may land toe-first instead of heel-first
β€’ Lameness often gets worse when turning in circles
β€’ Both front feet may be affected

What causes it?
β€’ Repeated stress and strain on the navicular area
β€’ Wear and tear on the bone and soft tissues
β€’ Sometimes, poor hoof shape or conformation

How is it diagnosed?
Veterinarians use nerve blocks, radiographs, ultrasounds, and MRIs to pinpoint the source of pain.

How can it be managed?
Management options include special shoeing, rest, and medications. The right approach depends on the individual horse and the specific problem. Remember, what might help one horse might not help another. Overall, early diagnosis and tailored care can help many horses stay comfortable and active.

If you have questions or concerns about navicular syndrome in regard to your own equine, contact your veterinarian.
