For those who eat dairy-free, here are the best cheese substitutes I've found as far as taste, texture and ingredients. It is really hard to find any without soy or canola in them. The Miyoko's comes in many flavors, is cashew based and works like a soft goat cheese. The Follow Your Heart sort of melts and is really nice on bread or pizza. I've actually put both on pizza at the same time.

I went camping with my family this weekend at Organic Pastures Dairy Co. this past weekend at the wonderful annual Camping With the Cows! So wonderful to see where our delicious raw dairy products come from. I was excited to learn about studies in Europe showing that drinking raw milk improved asthma symptoms.

An excellent read on grains! This article helps me understand where we've been led astray by the food pyramid, and why Americans have been getting more and more obese. Want healthy fiber? Eat your veggies in a rainbow of colors: greens, pumpkin, tomatoes, avocado, summer squash, eggplant, carrots, sweet potatoes.

Despite what you likely grew up hearing, grains are not the nutritional staple they’re claimed to be. Here's a breakdown of grains, gluten, and more.

Please consider contacting your House representative and both Senators today to let them know your concerns on this piece of legislature and that they should not pass through the revised 21st Century Cures Act. How to do this is described at the bottom.

This is a 996 page bill that contains both beneficial AND HARMFUL legislation which needs to be carefully read, understood, debated and amended by our legislators. Instead there are those trying to bypass this by putting it for a vote on the "suspension calendar" which is meant for bills which are completely non-controversial. This is not the case with this one. This bill is very controversial and would allow pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers to bypass many important safety and regulatory steps. We need our drugs and medical devices to be properly tested for safety. Drugs and various medical procedures such as electroconvulsive therapy are all inherently risky. I don't think it is in the public's interest to rush into passing something that could harm people through unintended consequences and lack of proper testing and monitoring on some products.

To contact your House Representative (they are scheduled to vote on this Wednesday 11/30!): go to www.congress.gov to find out who your Representative is and email and call them in Washington, and call their local district office.

To contact your 2 Senators: go to www.senate.gov then follow the steps to email them, and call them in Washington D. C. and their local district office.

Here's an easy and super-nutritious way to get most of your fruit and vegetable servings for the day, while at the same time eating lots of healthy fats, keeping the carbs low, and supporting local farmers by getting organic veggies from farmers' markets whenever possible. My lunch salad had organic lettuce, carrot, tomatoes, cucumber, avocado and radishes (that's 3 fruits and 3 vegetables). Topped with low-mercury tuna and raw sprouted pumpkin seeds. The honey mustard dressing contained local wildflower honey (you can substitute xylitol or stevia if you are going super low-sugar), apple cider vinegar, medium chain triglygeride oil, olive oil, and dijon mustard. I nibbled on the Greek olives while I made the salad (one of my other favorite fruits). For variety you can use leftover baked salmon, or grass-fed hamburger patty, cheese (if not sensitive), or more raw nuts and seeds (for vegans) as your protein topping. Delicious!!!

Here's an easy and super-nutritious, anti-inflammatory meal. Sweet potato hash with Kerrygold cultured butter, turmeric, ginger, sea salt, and 2 cage-free eggs cooked on top. With a side of kale cooked with apple cider vinegar. Very flavorful!

Dear Friends,

Do you want to improve your health and diet and prevent chronic problems such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis?

Would you like to know what you should eat, and which foods are actually throwing your body off balance?

Are you taking a shelf full of vitamins and supplements but are not sure if they are doing you any good?

Do you have low energy, high stress, depression, anxiety or trouble sleeping?

Are you on medication for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, migraines, heartburn or some other chronic problem?

As a holistic family physician with an interest in nutrition and herbal medicine, I am always looking for ways to help patients improve their nutrition and get rid of chronic unwanted conditions. For years I have recommended various vitamins and minerals to patients because of studies that show some compound or another is helpful for handling a certain condition. For example, I have been putting patients with arthritis on glucosamine to see if they are one of the people whose arthritis improves with it. I have also told many patients that magnesium helps insomnia and carpal tunnel syndrome, or vitamin E helps prevent heart disease. But I have always been somewhat troubled by this approach because I could never tell who would respond well to each supplement and who would not get any benefits. The reason for this difference in outcomes is that we all respond differently to various foods, supplements and drugs based on our own biological individuality. No two people are alike in the way they respond and this explains why some people get side effects from a medication and others don't, or why some people can drink coffee before bed and sleep fine and others would be awake all night.

I now have a way to test each individual person to determine how his or her body chemistry is out of balance and to determine exactly what supplements are needed, and in what exact dose, to restore a healthy balance. I can tell what supplements and medications you should avoid. Also, I can counsel you on what foods you should be eating to maintain health and which foods are causing your metabolism to go out of balance.

Nutri-Spec testing is quick and simple. It includes a number of chemical tests on your urine and saliva, as well as blood pressure and other clinical tests that are done right in the office. The entire testing process takes less than 30 minutes. The results of the tests and your individualized plan of food recommendations and supplements is formulated right then and you can start that very day. Often, people notice a difference in the way they feel (for the better!) within a few days.

The initial visit lasts about 40-60 minutes and includes in-depth nutritional counseling where you learn how many of the commonly-held nutritional “facts” are wrong. The first follow-up is within 7 days, to see how you are responding to the supplements and change in diet, and your personalized plan is adjusted for best results. Then you are retested every one to six months, depending on your original health and current symptoms.

To read more about Nutri-Spec, get the brochure “The Secret of Good Nutrition” from the doctor or the front desk, or contact me at Naturedoc@comcast.net if you have questions.

Call 510-586-0284 and set up your Nutri-Spec evaluation today.

Yours in Health,
Dr. Genevieve

Have you been to doctors who give you a quick look
and seem to want to "just give you another pill"?

Conventional medicines certainly have their place. The correct drug at the right time can save a life. All too often however, these drugs are over-used and at best do little more than mask symptoms, without actually handling what is malfunctioning in the body. The patient is still sick but may not
now feel it. The medicines given can have other long or short term harmful effects. Adding medicine on top of medicine complicates matters further.

Dr. Genevieve uses the best of conventional and alternative medicine to locate the root causes within the functioning of the body that are resulting in an unhealthy condition in the first place. She will take the time to sanely sort out any non-optimum situations with your body. Once your condition is fully established, she will work out a natural treatment plan to bring you back to health.

She knows well the power of chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, herbs, nutritional supplements, homeopathy and other treatments since she has experienced them for herself, her family and her patients. Our practice works with these other types of practitioners to give you a complete approach to your health.

Give us a call today. An initial appointment includes an in-depth review of your health history and current condition, a physical exam, and concludes with a sensible, natural, comprehensive plan of action to achieve your health goals.
