What is Edema?
It's swelling that happens when extra fluid gets trapped in your body’s tissues. You might notice it most in your feet, ankles, legs, hands, or around your eyes. The swollen area can feel puffy, and sometimes if you press it with a finger, it leaves a dent for a few seconds. S
Why does it happen?
Think of your body like it has pipes (blood vessels) and drains (the lymph system). Swelling happens when the “pipes” leak extra fluid into your body or the “drains” can’t keep up with the amount of fluid that is present.
What causes this to happen?
Well, you might be surprised to know that there are many everyday things that we do each day that can cause this to happen.
Standing or sitting too long (gravity!)
Injury, bug bites, or infection
Too much salt (your body holds onto the water)
Hormone changes (puberty/menstrual cycle)
Certain medications
Heart, kidney, or liver problems (more serious)
Lymph system drainage issues (lymphedema/removed nodes/surgery)
