ANKLES ON THE MEND

Once a sprained ankle heals to the point where the range of motion is near normal, ankle-strengthening exercises may be undertaken to the point of total muscle fatigue. Beyond that, balancing is important in retraining an injured ankle in terms of sensing where the ankle is in relation to the ground. Balance training may involve standing on a balancing board, which consists of a board that rests on a cylinder that allows it to roll back and forth. Strengthening and balance exercises are also likely to be combined with electrotherapy, range-of-motion exercises, and massage under the direction of a physical therapist who has experience in setting goals and limits.

P.S. After an ankle sprain, cardiovascular fitness can be maintained through cycling workouts.

THE IMPACT OF EXERCISE ON BONES AND JOINTS

While high-impact helps strengthen bones and reduces the risk of fractures, it is not for everyone. People with musculoskeletal ailments should avoid high-impact activities and stick with swimming, cycling, and brisk walking. These and other similar low-impact exercises that do not cause you to jar your body still provide a great workout, but spare your joints the pounding. Those with arthritis should also avoid high-impact activities can cause further damage to arthritic joints. And those with bones weakened by osteoporosis may find that the stress of high-impact activities can lead to fractures. Weight training, which strengthens and builds bone in a safer, low-impact manner, will serve better.

P.S. Any exercise that involves bouncy movements, in which your feet repeatedly leave the ground and land hard enough to significantly stress your joints, muscles, and bones, is considered "high-impact."

TREATING SPINAL STENOSIS
Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses nerves and produces pain. Most often, people who experience the problem are 60 or older. Although backbone changes related to osteoarthritis are usually the cause, spinal stenosis may also occur in younger people born with a narrowed spinal canal. Symptoms include aching in the buttocks, thigh, and calf muscles; pain radiating from the buttocks to the calves;tingling or numbness in the legs; and progressive leg weakness. If the symptoms are mild, treatment known as dynamic lumbar stabilization may be undertaken with physical therapy. The proper strengthening and flexibility exercises can lessen the effects of spinal stenosis.
P.S. Traction can be of great benefit as well.

As we emerge out of the covid-19 pause we all will begin to resume our normal activities, including exercise. If you have been unable to do your normal routine, be sure to decrease the intensity level and duration by at least 20 percent as you start back. Having some muscle soreness initially is normal but sharper pain is a warning signal to scale back.
Remember when referred by your doctor for physical therapy, by law, YOU have the choice on where to go. Tell your doctor YOU choose the 30+ years of experience at Catskill & Co-Greene Physical Therapy

PLAY BALL!

Baseball and softball are among the sports that cause overuse injuries of the shoulder. Rotator cuff muscles, which hold the shoulder bones together, are not intended to function under stress with the arm above a line parallel to the ground. If the shoulder joint is subjected to continual stress with the arm in an overhead position, the rotator cuff muscles begin to stretch. As a preventive measure, baseball and softball player should strengthen their rotator cuff muscles with exercises. Small weights (below 15 pounds) should be used becasue heavier weights will bring the larger muscles of the shoulder into play, thereby excluding the rotator cuff muscles. Exercises include (reverse) arm curls, front lifts (palms up and down), and lateral lifts.

P.S. Tennis players should also look to strengthen their rotator cuff muscles.
