The great Dr. Maya Angelou had so much wisdom to impart. She had that grounded, stable, wise presence and eloquence with her words.
We all have those people and situations that can challenge us to be reactive rather than responsive and quickly lose our peace. And each time we lose our peace we give up our power. But we all have triggers and we are all human! And therefore we may never be totally at peace but we can grow and choose to keep it most of the time. We inherently know what is good for us and what is not. We just need to learn to listen more to those subtleties.
For me the discipline of learning to keep my peace within is a key to being less reactive. To react or respond is a choice. And not everything warrants a reaction or a response for that matter.
How do I keep my peace?
I cultivate it daily with different practices in my tool box like Qi Gong, yoga, meditation, journaling, being in nature, sun bathing, the beach, putting my phone on silent or taking a break, not talking and being quiet, being by water, exercise (walking, hiking or a bike ride), trauma release exercises, chanting, dancing, getting enough rest, etc.
These practices help me be in my own energy. They help me quiet the noise outside of me so I can hear and KNOW what’s me and mine. And it empowers me to choose what and whom to engage with which protect my peace.
My peace, is one of my greatest assets. It helps my mental and physical well being. It’s all connected! And so I choose to cultivate, nourish it and protect it daily. Just like you’d tend to anything else you care about.
Like Dr. Maya Angelou says “you earn peace by choice and keep it with discipline!”
