I wasn’t born for ponds and reeds,
or muddy banks and dragonfly speed.

I chose a pot of pothos leaves
by the sunny front window
at Health with Integrity.

Best real estate in Cayucos, if you ask me.

Warm light.
Misting bottles.
Soft music humming like bees.

And the air—

always drifting
lavender…
eucalyptus…
wild orange…
like the whole world is breathing deeper.

Humans come and go all day.

They carry bracelets that clink like rain,
smooth stones that glow like riverbeds,
tiny bottles of magic they call oils.

They press drops on their wrists
and sigh.

I like that sound.

The sigh sound.

It means something heavy just floated away.

Sometimes the tall blond lady waters my plant
(extra puddles for me — bless her).
Sometimes someone whispers,
“This place feels so peaceful.”

That’s partly me, you know.

I guard the calm.

From between the leaves
I watch everything—

Diffusers puffing cloud-breath,
crystals catching sun sparks,
plants gossiping in chlorophyll,
the soft chime of the door
every time hope walks in.

A child spotted me once.

We locked eyes.

He smiled like we shared a secret.

We did.

That life can be small and still magical.
That healing smells like citrus and mint.
That even a frog
in a plant
in a little wellness shop
can feel exactly where he belongs.

Tonight when the shop grows quiet,
I’ll sing to the moon through the window glass
and dream of lily pads made of jade bracelets
and ponds scented with lavender mist.

Until morning…

when the door chimes again
and the world comes in
looking for peace.

And I’ll be here.

Tucked in my leaves.
