From 1950 to 1972, the University of Northern Iowa had a college chapter of Sigma Alpha Eta, a national fraternity for students in speech and hearing. In 1972, Sigma Alpha Eta's national fraternity merged with the ASHA Student Journal to establish The National Student Speech and Hearing Association, which later became the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA).

The UNI National Student Speech Language Hearing Association chapter continues to sponsor professional, social, and service opportunities for students in our program!

Did you know the Communications Arts Center opened in 1978 and has been home to the UNI Communication Sciences & Disorders Department for 47 years? Originally planned as the Speech-Art Complex, the Board of Regents approved construction in 1973. Due to rising budget projections, changes were made to the plans. Groundbreaking was held in 1975 and the building was completed in 1978. Check out the article from The Northern Iowan on April 14, 1978 about the department and clinic.

Today is International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) 2025.

Around the world, 79 million people who stutter and their allies are united by this year’s theme, “A Diverse Stuttering Community Meeting Challenges With Strengths.”

We honor every person who chooses to speak, every listener who makes space, and every family, friend, and professional who stands beside someone who stutters. Stuttering connects people of every age, background, and culture. Please join us in celebrating the many strengths that come from living and working within a diverse stuttering community.

Share your story. Post your photo. Tell the world what stuttering has taught you about patience, courage, and empathy. Use the hashtag to help your message reach others who need to hear it.
