Being the first in your family to go to therapy can feel heavy.

You might be untangling years of silence,
navigating guilt that isn’t yours, or learning how to name emotions that were never talked about.

You are not broken, you are just doing something new. And sometimes, doing something new in a family that’s built on survival can feel like betrayal; when really, it’s love and care. It’s a different way of honoring where you come from.

If you’re the first in your family to choose therapy, you’re not alone.

This is brave work.
Quiet, powerful, and healing work.

✨ And it matters.

It’s no surprise that many of us in the South Asian community were taught to stay strong, push through, and not talk about what we’re feeling. But holding it all in? That can get heavy.

Healing doesn’t mean you’re broken. It doesn’t mean something’s wrong with you. It just means you’re ready to stop carrying what was never yours to hold alone.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure, therapy can be a space to pause, unpack, and breathe. You don’t have to explain your culture here, we get it.

And if you need a sign that it’s okay to reach out for support, this is it. ✨

Blame it on the rain!
It’s no surprise that when the weather gets gloomy, so do our mood and energy. With the past month of gloom and rain we’ve been getting in Dallas, it would be no surprise if you find yourself lacking energy and motivation. The weather has a big impact on the way we feel, but a lot of times, instead of pushing ourselves past those gloomy days, we end up sinking into them. When you notice that your mood is lower during such days, make it a point to be active and engage in activities to keep your brain moving. If you find yourself struggling, remember to reach out to your support system, and if that is not enough, counseling is always here. 🌦🌈✨

“Engage with the client not the technique. You can have a hundred techniques, but there is a person there and that’s the issue.”
-Words of advice from Henk Sprierings, author of the book, “Becoming Compliant,” where he discusses his journey through his trauma and years of unsuccessful therapy.

As therapists, too many times we may get caught up in the techniques or modalities, that we forget that what we really need to do is engage with our clients and build on that relationship. We need to create a relationship where our clients feel comfortable telling us what they need from us and tell us when we’re wrong or when something is not working. We are all humans, and no one has all the answers, but we have to be willing to work with each other to grow rather than for each other.

"Refusing to dwell on the past isn't about ignoring the things that happened. Instead, it often means embracing and accepting your experiences so you can live in the present. So recognize the emotional toll that dwelling on something is taking on you, and then give yourself permission to move forward."

These two mental strength exercises can help you stop dwelling on the past.

How does your past experience affect your decisions today?
Too often we let our negative past experiences get shoved under the rug and do not acknowledge their impact on our behaviors and decisions today. Through EMDR and trauma processing, it is possible to shed light on to such experiences and learn to grow through them. Want to take a step towards your healing journey? Contact me today to get more information on EMDR and trauma therapy.

Unresolved trauma haunts us throughout our lives, and most of the time, we are unaware of the effect it has on us. As we go through life we may minimize our past, and don’t end up realizing the physical and psychological effects that our old wounds may have. It is important to understand the signs of these unresolved issues in order to really start healing from these wounds.

We often mistake our past traumas for intuition, especially if you have a lot of unresolved/unhealed wounds and emotions. These traumas hold us back from enjoying life, but we end up justifying it by claiming that it is just our intuition. So how can we tell the difference? We have to allow ourselves to self-reflect in order to understand whether we are making decisions based off a gut feeling or because we are afraid to face our unhealed wounds. Intuition does not need to be justified, but unresolved trauma repeatedly asks for justification and rationalization.
