How are ear and hearing care services integrated within your practice or health system?
The World Health Organization (WHO) is stepping up its efforts to improve ear and hearing care globally. On January 29, 2026, WHO will conduct a virtual strategic planning meeting with its network of collaborating centres and organizations. The aim of this gathering is to coordinate activities, share updates, and plan collaborations that will advance ear and hearing care services for the next two years.
With over 1.5 billion people experiencing some level of hearing decline in their lifetime, and at least 430 million needing rehabilitation, the importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. Over 60% of childhood hearing loss is preventable, which highlights the need for education and intervention, especially since about 90 million children aged 5–19 years live with hearing loss.
Participants include a diverse group of professionals and organizations such as universities, national hospitals, research centres, and NGOs. This meeting is particularly critical for health planners, audiologists, otolaryngologists, and public-health policymakers, along with educators and community health workers who play pivotal roles in integrating ear and hearing services into school and primary care programs.
