Last week, Dr. Lombardi welcomed the team from Gyder Surgical to his ambulatory surgery center in Bridgewater, NJ, where he became the first surgeon in the United States to use the GYDER Hip Navigation System.

The GYDER Hip Navigation System is the world’s first pin-less, image-less hip navigation technology designed specifically for precise cup placement in total hip replacement. The technology is already being used internationally in Australia and India.

This technology was a good fit for Dr. Lombardi because he performs off table DAA THR.
What does that mean?
THR = Total Hip Replacement
DAA = Direct Anterior Approach

The Direct Anterior Approach is a muscle-sparing technique that aims to spread muscles rather than cut them during hip replacement surgery. This navigation technology was a natural fit for his surgical style specifically because he does the DAA without a table and without X-ray.

Dr. Lombardi said:
“After using the Gyder hip navigation system in my ASC, my impression is that it is incredibly accurate without the use of pins or x-ray and adds minimal additional time to the procedure, while seamlessly entering into the surgical flow of the operation.”

As Black History Month comes to a close this week, we want to highlight a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon whose work continues to shape the future of joint replacement, Dr. Charles Nelson.

Dr. Nelson is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of Adult Reconstruction at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, where he specializes in adult reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee, including joint preservation, minimally invasive hip and knee replacement, and complex revision surgery.

He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, completed residency at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, and fellowship training in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

In 2025, Dr. Nelson was elected President of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) where he leads efforts to strengthen surgical education, advance certification standards, and promote fairness and equity in the field. 

Beyond the OR, he has published widely in orthopaedics, served on editorial boards, and contributed to research on health disparities and inclusive care helping expand opportunities and representation in a specialty where diversity has historically lagged.

Dr. Nelson embodies excellence, mentorship, and service, and we are so happy to highlight him this Black History Month.
