The brain is wired to prioritize safety and meaning over productivity, so global uncertainty, constant news and collective grief can pull attention away from tasks that suddenly feel small.

This isn’t laziness or a lack of discipline. It’s the human nervous system responding to stress, empathy and loss of control. In times like these, gentler expectations, limited news intake and shorter focus periods aren’t indulgent. They’re care for your mental wellbeing.

If things feel too heavy to handle alone, we're here to help. Call/text 988 or call 319-362-2174 any time, 24/7. Our caring, nonjudgmental counselors are here to listen and support you.

Today is National ! A 20 second hug can act as a powerful emotional reset. It calms your nervous system, reduces stress and strengthens emotional connection.

If hugs aren't comfortable, similar benefits can be felt from holding hands, petting an animal or laying under a weighted blanket.

We honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by recognizing mental health as a fundamental part of human dignity. Caring for our minds, supporting one another and breaking the stigma around mental health are powerful ways to live out Dr. King’s dream of a more just and humane world. Together, we can be a trusted support when life gets tough.

Our services and business office are open today. Call or text 988, or call 319-362-2174, to reach a caring, compassionate counselor any time, 24/7.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

His words remind us that courage is revealed not in comfort, but in moments of challenge—when standing up for justice, dignity, and humanity matters most.

At NAMI, we carry that call forward by advocating for mental health care, equity, and compassion for all. 🕊️
