Our very own Ann Richardson was featured in the February edition of the KCRG-TV9 and Community Savings Bank Surprise Squad! Nominated by her friend and colleague Mona Cook, Ann was recognized for making a difference in the lives of cancer patients on a daily basis while facing a cancer diagnosis of her own.

“It’s so different sitting in the patient’s chair," says Richardson. "I mentioned before the fears, anxieties. Those are real. And I think I have a greater perspective for the patients when they start talking about that. I get it more. I understand it more.”

Nurse Ann Richardson is one of the first faces to greet new patients at the Nassif Community Cancer Center in Cedar Rapids.

Today we celebrated Valentine's Day, or as we like to call it at UnityPoint Health, You Matter Day! Today at the Community Cancer Center and St. Luke's Radiation Center, we took time to recognize our team members with a card and some goodies to thank them for all they do for our patients! We also had some treats for our patients as they came in for appointments to show our appreciation for them trusting us with their care!

“Early detection can save your life. Since being diagnosed with cancer, I’ve had some of the scariest appointments I’ve ever had, but I still walk out of each one so thankful that I have the opportunity to tackle these challenges. Not everyone has that opportunity, and thanks to early detection, I do.”

"I can’t express how much the gift touched my heart. It brought a little bit of light to our lives during this difficult time!"

These are the words of Kristin, the daughter of a patient at the Community Cancer Center. Through our Family Care Program, we were able to provide a children's book and matching puppy plush toy for Kristin's son, Oliver.

The Family Care Program, which is funded by a grant from the Aiming for a Cure Foundation, was established to provide extra support for cancer patients with young children or grandchildren, because cancer affects the whole family. In addition to gifts like these, the Family Care Program provides education and resources, as well as special events for families throughout the year.
