Mark your calendars for the November Olson Hour!!!🗓️

To help supplement and expand your clinical and professional education, the faculty have decided to start offering a monthly, virtual educational forum—The Olson Hour! The Olson Hour gives the faculty a vehicle through which they can develop new learning opportunities for students that can be accessed outside of and in addition to traditional course offerings.

Generally, The Olson Hour will be held over Zoom from 12pm-1pm on the third Thursday of the month! You are strongly encouraged to attend The Olson Hour, however we plan to also record each forum; the trainings will be made available after the event within Teams.

In November, the Olson Hour will be held on Thursday November 20th from 12pm-1pm. Students in the program are required to develop their own theory of therapy, so for this Olson Hour, Dr. McPhee will shed light on his personal model of couples therapy 💡

The Zoom link will be sent out via email by our very own Makenzie. If you are not a current student and would like join the Olson Hour, private message us so we can get you the information!

See you on November 20th!!!!

You thought we were done with introductions? NOPE! Meet Kennedy everyone!

Kennedy completed her undergrad at Mount Mercy University in 2018 where she received her Bachelor’s in Psychology and minored in Criminal Justice. Kennedy is beginning her second year at Mount Mercy University working toward her master’s degree to become a licensed Marriage and Family therapist. Kennedy has worked in the mental health field for seven years leading to experience with adolescents, families and adults struggling with their own mental health. Her interest in becoming a therapist began at a young age and she has since been working with individuals in supporting and guiding them through difficult times in their lives.

Grab some iced coffee and meet Tonya this sunny Friday ☀️

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” - Carl Rogers

Tonya graduated from Mount Mercy University in 2023 with a major in psychology and minors in Spanish and sociology. During her undergraduate experience, Tonya dedicated over 300 hours to mentoring low-income, minority, and first-generation college students. This is where she found her passion for fostering connection, growth, and a sense of safety with those around her. Tonya is now in the second year of her Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy, where she is excited to work with humans of all different experiences and backgrounds.

Tonya brings her authentic self to the therapy room and believes in the power of having honest, compassionate conversations. She strives to create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment where people can also be their authentic selves - without fear of judgement. With a commitment to cultural humility, Tonya works to honor every person’s unique story, strengths, and challenges. Tonya aims to empower her clients while also offering thoughtful challenges that promote growth. She approaches therapy with a spirit of curiosity, acceptance, and a genuine desire to understand, ensuring that each person feels heard, valued, and respected.

In her free time, Tonya enjoys spending time with her cat, baking sweet treats, traveling, and being in nature. You will often find her with an iced coffee (or two) in her hands.

Welcome Suha!

Suha began her academic journey with a degree in Business, but her path soon led her toward the field of social work, where she found deep fulfillment in serving others. She worked as a case manager supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and now works in the medical field. These experiences, along with a long-standing curiosity about human behavior and connection, inspired her to pursue a career in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Suha’s interest in therapy began in high school and deepened through her professional work. She has long been fascinated by the complexities of human nature, our need for belonging and understanding, as well as the ways our environments and relationships shape who we are. Her approach to therapy is grounded in systemic thinking, and she values collaboration, empathy, and authenticity.

As a student therapist, Suha is committed to creating a safe, healing environment where clients feel seen and supported. She aims to foster growth through gentle challenges and empowerment.

She hopes to foster an open-minded, adaptable, compassionate presence in her work. She understands the vulnerability that can come with therapy and strives to create a space where clients feel seen, supported, and empowered in their healing journey.

Suha’s multicultural background and experience as an immigrant inform her commitment to a culturally sensitive therapy. She recognizes the nuanced experiences tied to identity, belonging, and cultural adaptation, and is honored to walk alongside clients as they navigate these aspects of their lives with care and insight.

Friday is for FUN so let’s meet the wonderful Sheena!

“We’re all capable of the most incredible change. We can evolve while still staying true to who we are. We can honor who we’ve been and choose who we want to be next. Now’s your chance.” The Thirteenth Doctor, The Woman Who Fell to Earth

Sheena graduated from Mount Mercy University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work with a minor in Psychology. Her journey into the field has been shaped through experiences working with individuals, couples, children, and families in various settings, including the education system, community mental health, and providing direct care.

At the heart of Sheena’s approach is a deep belief in authentic connection and the sustaining power of hope. She strives to create a space that is collaborative and rooted in curiosity, where clients can feel safe, heard, and free to be their full selves. She believes that everyone has the capacity for growth and is honored to walk alongside clients on their unique paths of self-discovery.

As a therapist, Sheena values inclusivity, cultural humility, and authenticity. She is particularly interested in supporting clients as they face life transitions, heal from grief and trauma, and explore neurodivergent perspectives. Working from a systemic and strengths-based perspective, she helps clients explore their stories and facilitate transformation. With humor, empathy, and compassion, she supports them through life’s challenges, recognizing that healing often comes from being seen and accepted, and that laughter can be just as powerful as tears in the process of growth.

Outside the therapy room, Sheena enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and cat (Vader). She also enjoys attending flea markets, Renaissance fairs, and pop culture conventions.
