Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that happens during several months of the year, typically during the fall and winter months when the days are shorter. It is thought that the lack of daylight can trigger the chemicals in the brain and create symptoms of depression including fatigue and social withdrawal. Just like regular depression, medication and therapy can help but here are several more options that can make this time of year easier: light treatment, exercise, spending time out in the sun when possible, creating a consistent sleep schedule, spending time with family and friends, and sticking to a routine.
