"Distinct psychiatric disorders have more in common biologically than previously believed, according to the largest and most detailed analysis to date of how genes influence mental illness.

The study, led by University of Colorado Boulder and Mass General Brigham researchers, could inform efforts to improve the way psychological disorders are diagnosed and provide insight for developing novel treatments that address multiple disorders at once.

The findings were published Dec. 10 in the journal Nature."

"In the short term, stress can push a child to practice for her piano recital or inspire a teen to study when he’d rather be out with friends. But chronic stress—for example, from unrelenting school pressures, social unrest, or violence—is different. Left unchecked, long-term stress can contribute to a long list of physical and mental health problems. Prolonged stress can cause high blood pressure, weaken the immune system, and contribute to diseases such as obesity and heart disease. It can also lead to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression—disorders that are becoming more common in youth.

Mental illness is at an all-time high—especially among children. In fact, between 2016 and 2020, the number of children aged 3 to 17 diagnosed with anxiety grew by 29% and those with depression by 27%, according to a study published in 2022 in JAMA Pediatrics.

Stress in young people doesn’t always look like stress in adults. But like adults, children and teens—even those with life-altering losses—can find healthy ways to cope. Together, young people and their parents or caregivers can learn to spot the signs of excess stress and, with the right tools, manage it."

I love my job. It is an honor and a privilege to work with so many amazing clients who entrust me with the most intimate details of their lives. I bear witness to their pain and their joy, sit with them in their sorrow and celebrate with them in their triumphs, hold space and hold hope, even when they cannot. I am eternally grateful to do this work. I try never to take it for granted. Thank you. ♡

"Experts agree that preparing schools for emergencies should not come at the cost of student well-being. Research and professional guidelines highlight ways to reduce harm and point to best practices that can make schools safer overall."

"The data is clear that, over time, exercise improves both mental health and cognitive abilities such as problem-solving...But many people give up long before they see those benefits because they set themselves up to fail or aren’t prepared for bumps along the way.
..Of course, we humans aren’t always great at sticking to something we don’t like, even if we know it brings benefits. So a non-exerciser’s best bet is to choose an activity they like or to bundle exercise with something else they enjoy, such as getting outside, spending time with a friend or pet, or listening to music or podcasts....
..People often feel that they have to go to a gym, but movement throughout the day can be as good as a dedicated exercise session...That could look like doing physical labor at work, schlepping toddlers whose motivation to walk is shaky, or tending a backyard garden come spring.

Federal guidelines recommend 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week, with some sort of muscle-strengthening exercise on two days.

But any movement that someone enjoys is a step in the right direction, whether that means jumping on a trampoline or playing with their dog..."

On this Presidents’ Day, I am again reminded of these words from Dr. King: “We need leaders not in love with money but in love with justice, not in love with publicity but in love with humanity.”

In these challenging times, I hold hope that our democracy will prevail and we will one day get there again. ✊🏼♥️🤍💙
