🎉We are sharing exciting news🎉

We are thrilled to welcome Amy Zurcher to our practice and assistive technology program!

Amy is an Indiana native who earned her Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from Indiana University in 2009. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine in 2012 with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. For the better part of her career, Amy was a travel PT. She used this opportunity as a means to explore the US, meanwhile diversifying her skill set and collaborating with healthcare providers with varying practice approaches. Her work in a variety of settings allowed Amy to see clients across a continuum of demographics from neonate to centenarian with a broad range of diagnoses and unique treatment needs. She was introduced to the expansive world of assistive technology upon moving to Colordao in 2021 and has since made a career of helping others achieve improved function and quality of life using adaptive and mobility equipment.

⭐️AAC has opened a window into Hayden’s ideas, opinions, and personality. Using AAC shows us that she is smart, witty, and has a desire to share her thoughts… thoughts that are limited by her body’s inability to use spoken words to communicate. There is so much going on in that mind of hers- unlocking the ability to share it helps not only us, but the world, see her as a unique person rather than merely as her diagnosis.

Close to wrapping up AAC awareness month…

Jameson’s mom, Kristy, shares:

Jameson’s AAC device has opened up so many opportunities for him. It has allowed him to share not only his wants and needs with the people in his life, but also lets him share what’s been going on in his day, his music preferences, and ask questions about the world around him. Jameson’s AAC device gives Jameson a way to share his sweetness and silliness, and to more fully take part in the communities he belongs to. It has been such a valuable tool.

💭Before we knew about AAC…Initially, we thought Harper would use sign language and gestures to communicate with us, her teachers and her friends. It became apparent at a young age that sign was not going to be her best communication modality and we were introduced to AAC in the early elementary school years.

⭐Now, Harper loves using her AAC device and it is her primary mode of communication. She loves to tell us her needs and wants and favorite things to do. It gives her a voice and gives us insight into her beautiful mind.

Daniel’s dad, James, shares their family’s AAC journey with us today

💭Before AAC Daniel used some signs and some pictures. It was inconsistent at best. He would get tired of it quickly so we were constantly changing communication methods.

⭐Today he is consistently using his device to tell us his wants and needs. He is even using it in his school work. This is the first communication method that he has used that he has not gotten bored or frustrated with.

We continue to 🎉 AAC Awareness month….Mason’s mom shares their family’s AAC journey:

💭Before AAC I felt that communication for Mason would remain very limited and frustrating for him. I worried that it would always be a guessing game for his family and caretakers.

⭐Today, after AAC Mason can express himself to us in ways I never imagined possible for him. I can see the relief in his face when he can tell us definitively what he needs or wants. It’s been such a wonderful adventure for Mason and for us.

💭Before I knew about AAC I wondered how we would ever know how Wyatt felt or what he understood. He would cry or smile to show like and dislike. He screamed a lot in frustration.

⭐Today Wyatt can tell people what he wants or needs. He can show his personality and understanding. People have higher expectations for him because with AAC it is clear he understands everything.
