We’re often asked about scars, but the more important question is why some scars heal more seamlessly than others.
Placement matters, of course, but what happens beneath the surface matters just as much.
Skin has a natural elasticity. When it’s pulled too tightly during closure, it resists. It wants to separate. Over time, that tension can lead to scars that appear wider or more noticeable.
A helpful way to think about it: stretch a rubber band and cut it. Skin behaves in a similar way when it’s under strain.
That’s why our approach doesn’t rely on the skin to hold everything in place. In an extended deep plane facelift, we lift and reposition the deeper structural layer of the face (often referred to as the SMAS, a supportive layer beneath the skin). By securing support at that level, and carefully releasing tissue through the cheeks and neck, we’re able to redistribute tension away from the surface.
The result is less stress on the incision itself, which allows the skin to heal more discreetly over time. Scars can’t be erased. But they can be thoughtfully managed, starting with how the procedure is performed.
