The importance of mindfulness is sinking into my bones. When I started running social groups a few summers ago the concept of shame hit me in the face. We all feel shame when we do things “wrong” (either in our own eyes or someone else’s), but it’s even more intense for neurodivergent kiddos. The posture of mindfulness lets thoughts, feelings, and behaviors be as they are without adding judgment. We can’t eradicate shame from the human experience, but we can limit its hold on us. We are good, we are worthy, we are enough. THIS is the place where social learning begins.

Some strategies she mentions are challenging core beliefs about who you are, conducting low-risk experiments to overcome avoidance, and limiting the assumption that you know what others are thinking about you. Great tips!

Clinical psychologist Sharon Saline, PsyD says reducing social anxiety begins by identifying your child’s core beliefs about social situations. By challenging these core beliefs and addressing safety seeking behaviors, children can discover healthier ways of interacting.

REQUIRED: an emotional regulation tool on our visual schedule! I LOVE the emotional regulation resources by . They have a wide variety of cute pictures of sensory tools and emotion faces. I also love the simplicity of the "I feel___ I need____" visual at the top.

I like combining these images with the more cognitive tools by and , especially inner coach and using a social behavior map. is so critical, it's nice to have lots of tools to draw from!

appreciation post Part Two!
🐠
We had so much fun learning to keep our body in the group! We put fishies in a sensory tub, walked using a hula hoop (kudos to stickers marking out space!), and did a freeze dance to "Body in the Group!" We also practiced being in a group but staying in our "space bubble" by walking in two separate hula hoops side by side. Such an important, and fun, skill to learn!
