The goal of our job is to teach, and each child learns in their own unique way. The goal in teaching reading is not regurgitating a program. It is an art, where we must connect to our students’ interests and learning style and pair it with our evolving knowledge.

We have to use the knowledge from our trainings and programs and adapt for each learner. If a student is not grasping a concept, then we need to revisit this concept maybe once maybe 10 to 20 times as we move them along. Maybe we even need to teach it in a different way and break it down.

We must also remember that children with reading difficulties also often have some degree of language challenge.

READING is LANGUAGE!

Yes language and learning disabilities are real challenges but……how is our instruction?

I see many young children in my practice that are dyslexic, but many are not! This becomes evident when I see them progressing when the code is broken down for them in a way that is understandable.

Some students simply have not received the right type or level of instruction. They haven’t been picked up by their school districts because the parents concerns are not being heard and they are told to wait. Then the strong readers become stronger readers and their children lag behind.

We really need to look at both the child’s abilities and the quality of instruction. They are both part of this undeniable equation.
