The U.S. doesn’t have just one Independence Day it has two. Today, June 19 (also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day) is a day of celebration for Black communities. The Emancipation Proclamation was enacted to abolish slavery, but Texas’s 250,000 enslaved people weren't informed until two and a half years later. Today, many people spend the holiday reflecting, praying, and educating. Also, celebrating with their friends and family.

Today Newell-Hoerling’s Mortuary helped the City of Chehalis with litter clean up. Employees; Michelle Hayes and Gail Hakola cleaned up the litter on National Ave. under the Chamber Way Overpass. Eight bags of litter plus an overturned shopping cart full of garbage were cleaned up. We even had a homeless veteran, Jesse, thank us for our efforts. We are proud to help our twin cities stay clean! (Michelle is in the pink shirt and Gail has the hat on)
