Happy National Nurse Practitioner Week! 💙

Today, we’re proud to recognize Alison (Ali) Benko, one of our dedicated Nurse Practitioners here at Compass Hospice.

Ali has spent the last six years serving patients and families in Hospice and Palliative Care. She says what she loves most about her work is the deep connection she forms with those she serves.

She shares: “They open their homes and lives to us, and it is very rewarding to provide comfort, education, and support for them during a very stressful time.”

We’re so grateful for Ali’s compassion, expertise, and commitment to our mission. Our organization—and the families we serve—wouldn’t be the same without her.

🌿 November is National Home Care & Hospice Month — a time to celebrate the incredible professionals who bring comfort, dignity, and compassion to patients and families every single day.

Today, we’re proud to recognize Brittany Cutler, one of our Nurse Practitioners at Compass Hospice.

When Brittany isn’t caring for patients, she’s soaking up family time with her husband, Sam, and their two children, Owen and Audrey. Whether it’s cheering on Owen at the baseball field or supporting Audrey at the horse barn, life is full of love, laughter, and adventure. Brittany also enjoys gardening, planting flowers, and traveling — especially when it means relaxing by the beach.

🩺 Brittany shares, “As a nurse practitioner, I felt drawn to hospice and palliative care because it allows me to care for patients in the most meaningful way—by helping them live their remaining days with peace, comfort, and dignity. For me, the work is about more than just medicine; it's about being there to bring comfort, ease pain, hold a hand, and simply be present in the moments that truly matter.”

We are so grateful for Brittany and all she does to make a difference in the lives of our patients and families. Our organization—and the families we serve—wouldn’t be the same without her. 🩵

Myth: Palliative care is only for cancer patients.

This month, as we celebrate National Home Care & Hospice Month, we’re shining a light on the importance of Palliative Care — compassionate support that focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

Palliative care helps patients manage symptoms, ease stress, and find peace while living with conditions such as heart failure, COPD, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and more. It’s care for the whole person — body, mind, and spirit — and it also supports families every step of the way.

At Compass, our palliative care team is dedicated to helping patients live as fully and comfortably as possible, no matter the diagnosis.

✨ Celebrating National Hospice & Palliative Care Month

This month, we honor a powerful example of what hospice and palliative care can truly be. When Jimmy Carter entered home hospice care in February 2023, his story began to shift the national conversation about what “end-of-life” care really means.

Instead of stepping back, President Carter lived many more meaningful months surrounded by family, comfort, and dignity — and helped others see that hospice isn’t just about the final days.

A few important lessons from his journey:
▪️Hospice care isn’t giving up. It’s a shift to living life fully.
▪️Quality of life can improve when comfort and goals are centered, not just length of life.
▪️Having meaningful conversations earlier makes a difference for patients and loved ones.

This month, we invite you to share your story or thoughts on hospice and palliative care. Use the hashtag to amplify the message: it’s not just about how we end, but how we live until then.

Let’s change the conversation together — because comfort, dignity, and love should be part of every story 🩵https://compassregionalhospice.org/grateful-family/✨

Volunteer Spotlight: Caroline County Rockstar - Debbi Williamson🌟

Meet one of our incredible Caroline County volunteers — a true gem who spends her time sitting with patients, playing games, and simply being present. After retiring in 2021, she wanted to give back — and found her calling with hospice care.

“I started volunteering during COVID, first at the Barnette Center’s front desk, and soon began visiting patients in their homes. Sometimes we do puzzles, sometimes we just sit and talk — whatever they’re up for. I love meeting wonderful people and helping families take a little break, even for a short time.”

She shared that being a trusted presence for patients and families has changed her outlook on life:

“Sharing that last part of life has taught me that death isn’t scary — it’s made me appreciate my own health and life so much more. Some of my patients have faced really difficult illnesses, and it just reminds me how lucky I am.”

We’re so grateful for her compassion, her time, and the joy she brings to every visit.
