With over 40 different names for sweeteners, you may be consuming more sugar than you imagined. Sugar alcohols are sweeteners used because a little goes a long way -- they are so sweet.
However, some studies 📖 also show that consuming large amounts of certain sugar alcohols may lead to higher cancer risk. In 2016, researchers at Umeå University in Sweden made the connection between high amounts of xylitol and Glioblastoma (GBM), a fast-moving and aggressive form of brain cancer.
As far back as 1977, researchers in England discovered bladder stones and tumors in laboratory mice who consumed high amounts of this sugar alcohol as well. Your sugar alcohols include sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, maltitol, maltitol syrup, lactitol, erythritol, isomalt.
You'll notice most end in 'tol'. Sugar alcohols have also been known to cause digestive distress. Sugar alcohols are being used in more and more products -- even those in the health section of your supermarket. Read your labels!
