As we approach the new year, we offer a gentle reminder that rest is a vital part of OCD Recovery. Exhaustion is actually a trigger for OCD. Not getting enough rest can make it more difficult to cope with OCD symptoms.

Learning how to slow down and attune to your needs is not “selfish.” It is a necessary element of learning how to cope with OCD.

When distressing taboo images or thoughts pop into your mind, they are not a reflection of your wants or desires.

Instead, they are a reflection of what you do NOT want. That’s why taboo intrusive thoughts are referred to as “ego-dystonic.”

“Ego-dystonic” means taboo intrusive thoughts are the OPPOSITE of your values. That’s why they distress you.

The more you try to avoid the discomfort, the more enmeshed in the OCD cycle you become. The more you develop the capacity and skills to accept the discomfort without ritualizing, the more you disrupt the OCD cycle!

It is important to understand that no matter how “irrational” a compulsion may appear, the reason our clients engage in the compulsion is that it feels rational to their brains.

Our role as a therapist is not to judge whether their compulsions are justified or logical. Instead, we are here to help them disengage from compulsions and develop strategies to cope with the distress caused by intrusive thoughts.
