Taboo OCD recovery isn’t about resisting scary intrusive thoughts. Recovery is about learning to observe unwanted thoughts without assigning truth or meaning to them.

Trying to avoid taboo intrusive thoughts only intensifies OCD. Exposure and Response Prevention gives you the skills to observe uwanted thoughts and feelings neutrally, while disengaging from compulsions.

Exposure and Response Prevention therapy will not be effective for BIPOC with OCD, if a therapist is not aware of how a client’s cultural and racial context impact their experience of OCD.

In particular, when designing exposure practices for BIPOC with OCD, there are exposures that could cause more harm than healing. If you are a BIPOC therpaist working with BIPOC clients with OCD, and you’re not sure how to design exposure activities that are culturally sensitive, ERP Kaleidoscope is here to help!

Taboo OCD can make you feel like you are the most condemned person to ever walk the earth.

Exposure and Response Prevention therapy can help you realize that your feelings are not always an accurate interpretation of reality.

OCD makes your worst fears feel like destiny. OCD is an expert at latching onto your worst fears and making them feel like an inevitable fate.

But the truth is that just because OCD makes your worst fears FEEL like they’re inevitable, does not mean you know what’s going to happen.

Furthermore, if the worst outcome is possible, then the best outcome is equally possible. Ultimately, however, the truth is that OCD cannot predict the future.

Please keep in mind that Exposure and Response Prevention therapy is a gradual, consensual process built upon trust, transparency, collaboration, and open communication.

The exposure activities included in this post are examples of what ERP therapy can look like.

But this list is not comprehensive nor is it reflective of every person’s experience. A trained ERP specialist will always consider an individual’s unique history, culture, and background when designing exposure activities.

The truth is that taboo intrusive thoughts are not more true than any other thought.

Why are myths and stereotypes about OCD harmful?

Perpetuating common stereotypes like “neat freak” or “germophobe,” diminish from the complexity of OCD, as well as the painful and debilitating impact OCD has on an individual’s life.

Misrepresentations and misconceptions about OCD increase a sense of isolation, shame, and stigma for those living with OCD. They also create barriers to accessing proper diagnosis, care, and support.

Instead of perpetuating OCD stereotypes, let’s choose to refrain from using OCD as a joke or adjective!
