At Wertz Chiropractic we use a comprehensive history and physical examination in combination with the most technologically advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to precisely identify the cause of your symptoms and treat you, as well as your pain. We believe patient communication and education are essential during each phase of recovery in order to speed the healing process, prevent symptoms from recurring and improve each patients overall quality of life. Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches. Doctors of Chiropractic -- often referred to as chiropractors or chiropractic physicians -- practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling. The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as "spinal manipulation," also called "chiropractic adjustment." The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile -- or restricted in their movement -- as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours. In many cases, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.

Shoveling Snow Without Hurting Your Back ❄️🧊

Snow shoveling is one of the most common triggers for low back injuries we see this time of year. The good news? A few simple technique changes can dramatically reduce your risk.

Protect your low back by following these tips:
✔️ Warm up first – a short walk or gentle stretches go a long way
✔️ Use your legs, not your back – squat slightly and keep your chest upright
✔️ Keep the shovel close to your body
✔️ Avoid twisting – step and turn with your feet instead
✔️ Take smaller scoops rather than heavy loads
✔️ Push the snow when possible instead of lifting
✔️ Take breaks – fatigue leads to poor form and injury

If your back feels sore, tight, or painful after shoveling, don’t ignore it—early care can prevent a small issue from turning into a bigger one.

Stay safe out there, and shovel smart!

Top Causes of Back Pain Issues

Back pain doesn’t usually “just happen.”
In most cases, there’s an underlying mechanical or lifestyle-related cause.

Here are some of the most common reasons people develop back pain:

🔹 Poor Posture & Prolonged Sitting
Long hours sitting at desks, in cars, or on couches can overload the spine and surrounding muscles.

🔹 Muscle Strains & Overuse
Improper lifting, repetitive movements, or sudden activity can strain muscles and ligaments.

🔹 Disc Problems
Bulging or herniated discs can irritate nearby nerves, causing sharp pain or symptoms that travel into the hips or legs.

🔹 Joint & Arthritic Changes
Restricted or irritated spinal joints can lead to stiffness, inflammation, and localized pain.

🔹 Weak Core & Poor Stability
When the core and stabilizing muscles aren’t doing their job, the spine absorbs more stress than it should.

At Wertz Chiropractic, Dr. Mark Wertz focuses on identifying the root cause of back pain—not just masking symptoms—so care is targeted, effective, and long-lasting.

5 Types of Back Pain & Their Common Causes

Not all back pain is the same—and knowing the difference matters.

Here are 5 common types of back pain we see and what often causes them:

🔹 Muscle Strain
Overuse, poor posture, sudden movements, or lifting incorrectly can strain muscles and ligaments.

🔹 Disc-Related Pain
Bulging or herniated discs can irritate nearby nerves, often causing sharp pain or symptoms that travel into the leg.

🔹 Joint (Facet) Pain
Stiff or irritated spinal joints can cause localized pain and reduced range of motion—often worse with twisting or extension.

🔹 Sciatic-Type Pain
Compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve may cause pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates into the hip, leg, or foot.

🔹 Postural / Mechanical Pain
Prolonged sitting, poor ergonomics, or repetitive stress can overload the spine and surrounding tissues over time.

At Wertz Chiropractic, Dr. Mark Wertz focuses on identifying which type of back pain you’re dealing with—so care is specific, effective, and focused on the true cause, not just symptoms.
