Getting to Know

Dr. Timothy Sanford is a board certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physician and is fellowship trained in Interventional Spine and Sports Medicine. He specializes in the non-surgical management of spine injuries (back and neck pain), sports injuries, arthritis, and any other type of injury to the (neuro)musculoskeletal system. Dr. Sanford recognizes that pain can significantly affect a patient’s life and his goals are to treat the patient’s injury or disorder to restore the patient’s function and quality of life, whether that be working without discomfort, getting back on the golf course, exercising again, or enjoying playing with the kids or grandkids. He uses cutting-edge technology and evidence based practices to achieve optimal results.

Dr. Sanford grew up in Utah and attended the University of Utah, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology. He went to medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He subsequently completed a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at the University of North Carolina. After residency, he completed an Interventional Spine and Sports Fellowship at Ahwatukee Sports and Spine. He loved his time at Ahwatukee Sports and Spine, so after his fellowship, he joined as an associate. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Sanford is excited to serve the people of Phoenix and the community.

Dr. Sanford is trained in physiatric skills. His treatment arena includes management of physical therapy, medications, fluoroscopically-guided interventional spine procedures, ultrasound-guided peripheral joint and soft tissue injections, viscosupplementation (supplemental hyaluronate for knee osteoarthritis) injections and trigger point injections. He also interprets MRIs, x-rays, and CT scans of the musculoskeletal system. Additionally, he is trained to perform and interpret nerve conduction studies and electromyography.

In addition to serving the people of Phoenix, he serves as a member of the North American Spine Society Coverage Committee, where he helps “develop credible and reasonable coverage recommendations for spine care by proactively reviewing and incorporating existing NASS policy comments and Evidence-based Medicine guidelines to educate physicians and payors on fair coverage decisions.”
