Dear Family and Friends,

What if you were living on borrowed time?

Tara Shamberger is fighting for her life. In 2013, she was diagnosed with sarcoidosis. Unfortunately, Tara is all too familiar with the impacts of this illness, as sarcoidosis runs in her family. Tara’s condition was complicated further by a diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension just a year later. Now, doctors say a double lung transplant is critical to her survival. While awaiting her transplant, she relies on an oxygen tank for every breath.

This has been a difficult time for Tara, as she’s used to being much more independent and active. While she is still able to get out for a drive, watch preaching on television, and listen to and sing gospel songs, other more strenuous activities, are quite limited. She looks forward to feeling like her old self and taking a trip to Stone Mountain, Georgia to climb the mountain again. More than anything, she wants to spend many more years with her son, family, and friends. But right now, she needs your help.

Unfortunately, Tara’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.

The average double lung transplant costs more than $1 million. And that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Tara must travel more than 75 miles to reach her transplant center for evaluations and doctors’ appointments. When she receives her transplant, Tara and her caregiver will need to stay near the hospital during recovery, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging, adding to the financial strain.

What if your life depended on the compassion and generosity of others?

The National Foundation for Transplants is working with volunteers and supporters to help relieve Tara’s growing burden of expenses. The National Foundation for Transplants has been assisting transplant patients with fundraising support for more than 35 years. Your gift of any amount will enable The National Foundation for Transplants to provide Tara with the financial support she desperately needs.
