Last week, the Word Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) released its newest version of its Standards of Care (SOC), version 8. The WPATH SOC have long been seen as best practice in approaching care for transgender and gender diverse patients, and this new update is a major change from the 2012 SOC 7 which puts the standards recommended much more closely in-line with current best practices in transgender health care.
There are many changes in the WPATH recommendations over the previous version that, if broadly instituted, will improve access and care standards for transgender and gender diverse patients. However, it is important to keep in mind that these new standards will take time to be implemented across provider groups and be used to inform possible changes in insurance coverage policies for transgender care.
Over the next few months, the UNC Transgender Health Program will be examining these recommendations from WPATH and instituting some changes based on them. However for many of our patients, their access to care will still be dictated by the policies of your insurers, as well as federal and state policies. The UNC Transgender Health Program will work with our providers, insurance partners, and local organizations to disseminate needed information relating to the standards and changes that will affect patient’s care moving forward.
These new standards are a welcome change that we at THP believe will improve access to care. If you have questions about how these changes relate to you and your specific care needs, contact us and we will be happy to assist you!
