The original Ocutech bioptic telescope, called the VES, was invented by Ocutech’s founding president, Russ Pekar, Ph.D., who is himself visually impaired. Dr. Pekar knows personally the needs and challenges faced daily by the visually impaired, and he is devoted to creating low vision aids that are effective, easy to use, attractive and comfortable to wear. Ocutech is committed to the needs of the visually impaired and supports its products with generous warranties. Ocutech Low Vision Aids are available through doctors and clinics that specialize in low vision care throughout the world. In 1996, Ocutech received worldwide attention when it created the first and only autofocusing bioptic telescope called the VES-AutoFocus. The VES-AutoFocus development project took over 6 years and almost $1 million to complete. Now, thousands throughout the world wear the VES-AutoFocus and experience the closest to normal magnified vision possible from a low vision aid. Individuals who had never been successful with bioptic telescopes gained new-found freedom with the VES-AutoFocus. “It changed my life” many have said. In 1999 Ocutech received the prestigious WINSTON GORDON AWARD from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind in honor of its innovative work to create the VES-AutoFocus.

For many stroke and head‑injury survivors, vision loss, especially loss of side vision, can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming. Navigating a room, crossing a street, or even recognizing someone approaching from the side becomes a challenge.

Ocutech’s SideSight™ was created to help.

SideSight is a lightweight, wearable device designed to expand peripheral awareness for individuals with hemianopsia or other side‑vision loss. By using a unique optical system, it gently shifts images from the missing side into the area the user can see—helping them detect movement, avoid obstacles, and feel more secure in their surroundings.

How SideSight Helps:
• Increases awareness of people and objects approaching from the side
• Supports safer mobility and navigation
• Helps users regain confidence in daily activities
• Designed for comfort, simplicity, and real‑world use

For stroke survivors, TBI patients, and anyone living with side‑vision loss, SideSight offers a practical step toward greater independence.

Losing part of your visual field after a stroke, head injury, or hemianopia can make everyday life feel unpredictable. When you can’t see what’s happening on one side, simple moments like walking through a doorway, navigating a store aisle, stepping into a busy room can become stressful.

SideSight™ was created to give that confidence back.

This small, intuitive device gently vibrates when something is approaching from the side you can’t see, helping you stay aware, avoid collisions, and move through the world with greater independence. No complicated steps. No learning curve. Just a natural way to stay safe and regain trust in your surroundings.

For individuals living with hemianopia, spatial neglect, tunnel vision, or loss of side vision, SideSight™ offers something powerful: peace of mind.

Because everyone deserves to feel secure in their own movement.

Glaucoma Awareness Month.
January is nationally recognized as Glaucoma Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating the public about one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness. Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it typically has no early symptoms, and many people don’t know they have it until vision loss has already occurred. Routine, comprehensive eye exams are the best defense.
