Successful Steps Dyslexia Intervention

Successful Steps Dyslexia Intervention I’m a certified Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner offering online reading tutoring using the evidence-based Wilson Reading System.

I help students with dyslexia improve reading fluency, decoding, spelling, and confidence through personalized intervention. I’ve been an educator for over 20 years, with extensive experience teaching both elementary and secondary students. Over time, I discovered my deep passion for teaching reading and writing. However, I realized that some students with learning disabilities, particularly those

with dyslexia, were not receiving the support they needed to succeed. This led me to pursue a Master's degree in Education and advanced training to become a certified reading specialist and Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner, specializing in the Wilson Reading System. This evidence-based structured literacy program helps students with dyslexia improve their reading skills. I now teach privately, both in-person and online, providing specialized reading instruction to students of all ages. My goal is to offer intensive, personalized tutoring for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences, helping them gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school and beyond.

My child has dyslexia… now what?

This is one of the most common questions I hear from parents.

Not because there aren’t options…
but because the options are confusing.

Schools, tutors, programs…
Where do you actually go for the right kind of help?

Many parents are surprised to learn:

Not all reading instruction works for dyslexic learners
School support can vary widely
And the type of instruction matters more than the setting

Students with dyslexia don’t just need more help.
They need the right kind of help.

I wrote a blog post breaking this down in a clear, practical way so you can understand your options and figure out your next step.

Have you ever seen a child work really hard at reading, but still not make the progress you expected?

It’s not always about effort.
It’s often about the type of instruction.

Some programs work for many children, but not for those with dyslexia or persistent reading difficulties.

What actually helps? Structured Literacy.

If you’ve ever wondered what that means, I explain it here:

Sometimes the first sign of dyslexia is not that reading instruction failed every child. It is that it failed one bright, capable child.

That is part of what makes dyslexia so confusing for families. Parents may watch one child learn to read with little trouble, while another struggles despite being bright, hardworking, and trying hard.

In many cases, the issue is not effort. It is that the instruction is not a good match for how that child learns.

In my latest blog post, I share:
• why traditional reading instruction may work for many children but still fail a child with dyslexia
• why dyslexic students often need more than basic phonics
• why pace, mastery, and scaffolding matter so much
• what kind of instruction tends to be a better fit

If this sounds like your child, I hope this post gives you some clarity and direction.

Traditional reading instruction often works well for many children, but for students with dyslexia, it often is not explicit, systematic, or intensive enough. In this post, I explain why dyslexic students often need more than basic phonics, including direct instruction in syllables, morphology, mast...

When parents start looking into dyslexia testing, the questions usually come quickly.

Who actually evaluates dyslexia?
How long does testing take?
Will the results help my child get support at school?
Is private testing worth it?

Many parents are trying to understand the evaluation process while also advocating for their child. Unfortunately, clear answers can be hard to find.

I wrote a new blog post that answers 12 questions parents frequently ask before scheduling dyslexia testing for their child. The goal is to help families better understand how testing works and what to expect.

The report is often filled with unfamiliar test names, charts of numbers, and technical language. It can be hard to know what the results actually mean for your child.

In this blog post, I explain what kinds of tests are included in dyslexia evaluations and what experts are actually looking for when they interpret the results.
