Successful Steps Dyslexia Intervention

Successful Steps Dyslexia Intervention I’m a certified Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner offering online reading tutoring using the evidence-based Wilson Reading System.

I help students with dyslexia improve reading fluency, decoding, spelling, and confidence through personalized intervention. I’ve been an educator for over 20 years, with extensive experience teaching both elementary and secondary students. Over time, I discovered my deep passion for teaching reading and writing. However, I realized that some students with learning disabilities, particularly those with dyslexia, were not receiving the support they needed to succeed. This led me to pursue a Master's degree in Education and advanced training to become a certified reading specialist and Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner, specializing in the Wilson Reading System. This evidence-based structured literacy program helps students with dyslexia improve their reading skills. I now teach privately, both in-person and online, providing specialized reading instruction to students of all ages. My goal is to offer intensive, personalized tutoring for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences, helping them gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Many parents have told me something like this:

“I knew my child was struggling to read… but I didn’t realize how significant it was.”

Often, the delay in getting help isn’t because parents ignore concerns. It’s because they’re told things that sound reassuring:
• “They’ll grow out of it.”
• “They’re bright, so it can’t be dyslexia.”
• “Slow reading isn’t a big deal.”
• “Once there’s a 504 or IEP, that should solve it.”

I recently wrote a blog post that breaks down 10 common dyslexia myths that keep parents from getting help, and what research actually shows instead.

If you’re a parent who has ever wondered whether to wait, push, or ask more questions about your child’s reading, I hope this brings clarity and reassurance.

💬 Question for parents:
Have you ever been told to “wait and see” when you felt something wasn’t quite right?

Many parents delay getting help for dyslexia not because they ignore concerns, but because they are told things that sound reassuring. This post breaks down the most common dyslexia myths parents hear and explains what research actually shows, so families can make informed decisions sooner.

When reading doesn’t come easily for a child, most parents don’t start with answers.
They start with questions.

Is this just a phase?
Why does reading take so much effort?
Why does my child understand stories but struggle to read independently?

These questions often come up long before testing or diagnoses enter the picture. They matter because they are often the first signs that a child may need a different kind of support.

I just shared a new blog post that explores the questions parents commonly ask when their child’s reading doesn’t come easily, what research tells us about those early concerns, and why families don’t need to wait for a formal diagnosis to start helping their child.

If your child has been diagnosed with dyslexia—or you strongly suspect dyslexia—you’re likely looking for an approach that is clear, structured, and effective.

I’m Heidi, a Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner and dyslexia specialist. I provide one-on-one reading intervention using the Wilson Reading System, an evidence-based, structured literacy approach designed specifically for students with dyslexia and persistent reading difficulties.

Many of the families I work with come to me after trying other reading programs without seeing the progress they hoped for. My focus is on explicit, systematic instruction that helps students build accurate decoding skills, spelling, and confidence as readers.

Most parents don’t start out thinking about dyslexia.

They start with a feeling that something isn’t quite lining up.

Their child is curious, thoughtful, and capable, but learning to read feels harder than it should. Reading practice doesn’t seem to help the way everyone expects. Progress feels slow, uneven, or exhausting.

What many parents don’t realize is that early signs of dyslexia often appear before reading instruction even begins, during language development. Difficulty with rhyming, remembering verbal information, slow or effortful reading, or strong understanding when listening but struggling to read independently can be part of a bigger pattern.

What matters most isn’t one hard year or one missed milestone.
It’s patterns over time, especially when progress doesn’t improve with typical instruction.

I hear from so many parents who say they wish someone had told them earlier that noticing these patterns isn’t overreacting. It’s paying attention.

Early awareness doesn’t label a child.
It helps parents ask better questions and find better support.

💬 I’m curious:
What was the first sign that made you stop and think, “Something isn’t lining up yet”?

👉 If this resonates, I wrote a blog post that explains the early signs of dyslexia parents often notice, what matters most, and what to do next.

Many parents ask the same question: Is online dyslexia tutoring really as effective as in-person support?

With so many families trying to balance busy schedules, school changes, and learning gaps, it’s an important question to ask. In this post, I break down what the research actually shows and explain what matters most when choosing dyslexia tutoring for your child. Spoiler: progress depends far more on the quality of instruction than on whether tutoring happens online or face to face.

If you’re navigating reading support for a child with dyslexia and want clear, evidence-based guidance, I hope this article brings clarity and reassurance.

Parents often wonder whether online dyslexia tutoring can truly be as effective as in-person instruction. Research shows that when dyslexia tutoring is structured, evidence-based, and taught by a trained specialist, students can make meaningful reading progress in either setting. This article explai...

Is your child working hard at reading… but still not making the progress you'd expect?

You've probably tried phonics, sight words, and extra reading time.

But there’s one part of literacy instruction that often gets skipped — and it could be holding your child back:

Spelling.

Spelling and reading use the same brain processes.
When spelling is taught explicitly (not just memorized for a test), it actually reinforces how words are read and understood.

As a dyslexia tutor using research-backed methods like Wilson Reading and Orton-Gillingham, I’ve seen this over and over:
Once spelling is treated as essential, reading finally starts to click.

If your child is stuck in a reading plateau, this could be why.

If your child is working hard to read but still not making the progress you hoped for, the missing piece might not be more reading practice — it might be spelling.

Stop pushing your child to love reading. Read my blog to find out what to do instead.

If your child has ever avoided reading or felt frustrated at school, you are not alone. My latest blog shares my son’s story. He once hated reading, pretended to read, and felt defeated despite his best efforts.

Everything changed when he discovered subjects he was passionate about in college. Reading stopped feeling like a chore and became a way to explore what he truly loved.

The lesson is simple. It is not about forcing kids to love reading. It is about helping them love learning. When learning becomes meaningful, reading naturally follows.

If you want to help your struggling reader build confidence and enjoy learning, check out the full post below.

Let’s help kids discover the joy of learning together! ❤️

If your child hates reading, you are not alone. Discover why focusing on a love of learning, not a love of reading, leads to real motivation and long-term success for struggling readers.

Struggling readers often carry the weight of past frustration, just like I carried the fear of returning to the gym after an injury.

In my latest blog, I share how lessons from push-ups and strength training can shed light on supporting children with dyslexia. Small, measurable steps, tailored instruction, and encouragement can turn frustration into progress and confidence.

If your child has struggled with reading programs, this blog offers insights and strategies to help them regain confidence and move forward at their own pace.

I never expected push-ups to teach me so much about helping struggling readers, but my own experience with a shoulder injury showed me just how important the right plan can be.
