A new publication from UNC Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery has been published online in The Laryngoscope.

Nicholas J. Thompson, MD and colleagues examined long-term hearing preservation in cochlear implant recipients with electrodes placed in the acoustic region of the cochlea. Their findings showed that deeper electrode insertion and placement within the functional acoustic hearing region did not increase the risk of delayed loss of residual hearing.
This collaborative research included contributions from UNC neurotologists, ENT resident Evan Nix, MD, auditory researchers, and clinical audiology.

Congratulations to Dr. Tochigi from our Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology on receiving a research award recognizing his work in basic science and adeno-tonsillar disease.

Dr. Tochigi’s research explores the effects of topical steroids on adenoid tissue, an innovative area that builds on UNC’s longstanding interest in tonsil and adenoid hyperplasia. His work has also fostered collaboration between his home institute in Japan and the University of North Carolina while mentoring UNC medical students along the way.

We are proud to celebrate his dedication to advancing research and improving care for pediatric patients. 💙
