Big news for our resident team 👏 Congratulations to Taylor Stack, MD, on being awarded a $10,000 research grant from the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy Foundation for her study, “Radiologic and computational analysis of cranial facial release.” This project highlights the innovation and research excellence of our trainees as they advance the field of otolaryngology. We look forward to seeing this work presented and published in the future.

UNC Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery is leading a national NCI-sponsored clinical trial evaluating neoadjuvant chemotherapy with or without immunotherapy (cemiplimab) for locally advanced sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma. The randomized Phase 2 study is led by Dr. Siddharth Sheth, with UNC serving as the lead site and coordinating center. Activated February 27, 2026, the trial is the first randomized prospective study evaluating chemoimmunotherapy for this disease. Patient enrollment is expected to begin summer 2026.

A new publication from UNC Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery has been published online in The Laryngoscope.

Nicholas J. Thompson, MD and colleagues examined long-term hearing preservation in cochlear implant recipients with electrodes placed in the acoustic region of the cochlea. Their findings showed that deeper electrode insertion and placement within the functional acoustic hearing region did not increase the risk of delayed loss of residual hearing.
This collaborative research included contributions from UNC neurotologists, ENT resident Evan Nix, MD, auditory researchers, and clinical audiology.
