The Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Lab, led by Louise Thoma traveled to Chicago in October to share their research at the American College of Rheumatology Convergence Meeting. Two third-year DPT students were able to attend thanks to support from their Rheumatology Research Foundation Preceptorships. Experiences like these continue to strengthen our community of scholars and future clinicians.

Last week, our OT and PT students came together for an IPE (Interprofessional Education) case discussion—diving into where our disciplines differ, where they overlap, and how we can deliver better patient-centered care together.

By sharing perspectives, challenging assumptions, and exploring each profession’s unique lens, students gained a deeper understanding of how collaborative practice leads to stronger outcomes for the people we serve.

What’s new with UNC DPT Faculty:

An exciting new publication was recently released with Dr. Louise Thoma, PT, DPT, PhD, as the senior author, in collaboration with Dr. Astia Allenzara, MD, MSCR, as the first author. Dr. Allenzara, is a rheumatologist and a strong collaborator with Dr. Thoma. Together, they investigated the utilization and timing of rehabilitation services for patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, a group of autoimmune diseases which can impact function. They found service utilization occurred nearly two years after the initial diagnosis. This highlights a potential gap in care for patients with Myositis.

Meet: Audrey Czejkowski, PT, DPT, NCS, MSCS!

Audrey is a proud alumna of UNC's DPT program and credits much of her confidence as a new graduate to the education she received from Neuro STEP UP.

Neuro STEP UP, building off the original MS STEP UP program (est. 2008), is a two-year track focused on neurodegenerative diseases like MS, Parkinson’s and ALS.

This program exists thanks to the generous support of Angela Rosenberg and Marty Rosenberg, who endowed the track in 2019 and continue to fuel the next generation of neurologic physical-therapy leaders.

Today, Audrey is giving back to the profession as a residency coordinator, adjunct instructor, and inpatient rehabilitation clinician. She continues to mentor future PTs while providing exceptional care to patients on their recovery journey.

An exciting new publication by Dr. Mike Lewek and team who investigated how combining real-time feedback with a powered ankle exoskeleton helps boost forward propulsion during gait.

Congratulations to Steven A. Thompson! This was Steven's first first-author publication. He is a PhD student in Dr. Lewek’s ReGaiN lab and is doing his PhD through the Biomedical Engineering Department.
