Last week, a group of nurses from UNC Hospitals rolled up their sleeves and volunteered to cook a fabulous breakfast for families and patients at the SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill! 🍳✨From flipping pancakes to sharing smiles, it was a joy to serve and connect with our community! 🥯 🥣

The Biannual Structural Heart Patient Reunion is a lunch meeting being held in Spring 2026 for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and MitraClip patients. This luncheon will be a chance for patients to reunite with their care team and share stories of their recovery! Congratulations to Gerald Ulmer, an NA in the Flex Pool, for his exceptional dedication and commitment to ensuring 4 West continued to run smoothly. Gerald went above and beyond as he made multiple trips to various departments to gather supplies and equipment all while completing his NA duties on the unit. His practice approach and willingness to support the team exemplify our organizational goal of It Starts with Me.

His efforts ensured the nursing staff on 4 West had everything needed to provide excellent Carolina Care to our patients.

Congratulations to Becky McElyea, CWOWN, for her help with a surgical oncology patient. Having trouble with her surgical wounds and no transportation available, a patient called in for help. With no access to wound care supplies and limited health literacy, many suggestions were made to no avail. The nurse navigators turned to Becky.

Becky called the patient and did a telehealth visit that same day providing videos to demonstrate wet to dry dressing changes. She even sent the patient wound care supplies in the mail to ensure she was able to get care until her next visit.

Thank you, Becky, for Leading the Way and providing innovative and compassionate care to our patients!

Congratulations to Ellyson Burks, CNII, CTCCU, for receiving a Leadership Challenge Coin! Elly was instrumental in advocating for her patient who had just delivered a baby.

Her nominator wrote in part:

"Elly's advocation and HOLISTIC care for the patient was one of the best demonstrations of Carolina Care that I have witnessed. Her understanding of the importance of mother/baby bonding, even as a CT nurse, and how that would impact the patient's health was the type of nursing we strive to provide. Elly demonstrates excellent Carolina Care through her interactions with all patients - but this was one that definitely stuck out!"
