Situated on 120 wooded acres in Chapel Hill, Carol Woods is a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community that promotes an active lifestyle supported by the area’s educational, cultural and medical resources. A commitment to well-being and preventative care enables the 465 residents to pursue activities that support a sense of individual fulfillment and purpose. Carol Woods was founded in 1979 by a group of local residents wanting to retire in Chapel Hill. It is governed by a local, all-volunteer board of directors entrusted with ultimate fiduciary responsibility.

Animals have a way of softening our days, sparking conversation, and creating moments of genuine connection. Whether it’s a resident pausing for a friendly greeting or a staff member finding a moment of calm during a busy day, pets bring comfort, joy, and a sense of togetherness to our community.

Being a pet-friendly campus means more than welcoming animals, it means nurturing well-being for everyone who lives and works here. The presence of pets reminds us to slow down, smile, and care for one another in simple, meaningful ways. 💙

Architecture matters in aging services because the spaces we create influence dignity, safety, and quality of life.

Every now and then you get to meet your heroes. Yesterday in Chapel Hill, our Executive Director had that honor.

Eleanor Kinnaird, age 94, served in the North Carolina General Assembly for 16 years. She proudly represented the people of Orange and Chatham counties from 1997 to 2013.

Throughout his incarceration, Brian wrote several members of the General Assembly to bring to their attention matters inside the prison system that he believed needed their oversight. Only one ever wrote him back. Yesterday he got to meet her at the Peace and Justice Forum at Carol Woods Retirement Community, where he spoke about his personal journey and OurJourney.

"I still have her letters," Brian said. "I wasn't one of Ellie's constituents, couldn't vote, and was locked up, yet she took the time to respond thoughtfully, affirming my humanity in the process."

There are people whose work quietly holds a place together — not with fanfare, but with steady hands, unwavering commitment, and a deep sense of responsibility to others. Our maintenance team is made up of those people. Day in and day out, they give so much of themselves — often without recognition, never without care.

Since Storm Chantal, they’ve carried even more: the weight of sudden challenges, long days, and the unseen burdens that come with restoring what’s been shaken. Yet they met it all with grace and grit, never stepping back, always stepping forward. Their presence has been a quiet reassurance to us all — a reminder that true strength is steady, humble, and often unspoken. We are not only thankful for what they do — we are deeply grateful for who they are.🛠️💚
