Larry started drinking at 12, chasing a feeling that would eventually turn into a 15-year addiction to crack co***ne. Over time, addiction took everything: his home, his finances, his freedom, and his sense of self. By 38, he was homeless, in debt, and in and out of jail, convinced his life had little value.

When he walked into Freedom House with nothing but the clothes on his back, he says it was the first time he felt real hope. He made the decision to change and held onto the principles he learned there. Those same principles later carried him through an intense cancer diagnosis and treatment without returning to substance use.

His story is proof that recovery isn’t easy - but it is possible.

Freedom House began in 1974 as a small detox and residential program serving just ten individuals with a simple but powerful belief: recovery is possible.

What started as a modest program rooted in compassion and community has grown into one of the largest providers of behavioral health services in the region. Today, Freedom House is headquartered in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with additional outpatient clinics in Durham, Roxboro, and Warrenton - expanding access to care while staying true to our original mission.

Over the years, our services have evolved, but our purpose never wavered. Though our teams and programs have grown, we remain committed to one guiding principle: recovery happens here - no matter who, no matter what, no matter when.

Our continuum of care now includes six residential substance use recovery homes across multiple counties, a 16-bed facility-based crisis unit, and 24/7/365 mobile crisis services supporting individuals and families wherever they are. Each service is grounded in dignity, evidence-based care, and the unwavering belief that everyone deserves a meaningful life filled with purpose.

For more than 50 years, we’ve walked alongside North Carolinians in some of their hardest moments - and we’re honored to continue that work.

Here’s to over five decades of healing, hope, and community care.

February 11–17 was Children of Addiction Awareness Week.

This week highlights the unique needs of children impacted by parental addiction. It’s normal to feel helpless, frustrated, or overwhelmed when a parent is struggling with substance misuse.

Whether you grew up with a parent battling addiction or are facing that reality today, you are not alone.

This Valentine’s Day, we invite you to invest in yourself and your healing. Whether that looks like reaching out for support, sitting quietly in nature, or putting your thoughts on paper, every step you take toward wellness matters.

Your journey is worth honoring. And you are worth the care.

Many of our staff were in recovery themselves and now give back the care they once received. Hear what one of our past clients, now a staff member has to say about walking her journey:

"Hi my name, is Cheryl. In June of 2014, I was transported from RJBlackley Treatment Center in Bunter NC to the women's recovery house in Chapel Hill. I lived at the women's house for 90 days, going to meetings and learning about the disease of addiction and how out of control my life had become. In March of 2023, I got an opportunity to become a Freedom House employee. Today, I’m 11 years, 8 months and 1 day clean. My clean date June 5, 2014."

Change is possible. Redemption is real. Reclaim your life with people who have been in your shoes.

This Black History Month, we honor the strength, resilience, and courage of the Black community: past, present, and future.

We celebrate those in our community who are walking the path of recovery. Choosing healing is an act of bravery. Every step forward, no matter how small, is a testament to strength that has always been there.

And to those who haven’t yet sought recovery: there is hope. You are not broken. You are not alone. You are worth investing in.

At Freedom House, we believe everyone deserves access to compassionate, person-centered support. We meet you where you are, honor your story, and walk beside you toward healing and wholeness.

Your life matters. Your healing matters. Let us walk with you.
