November is often a time of showing gratitude to those who mean much to us — so we're shining a light on our community partner: Healing Transitions (HT)! Since our first collaboration in October 2022, Freedom House Recovery Center’s Facility-Based Crisis Unit (FBCS) and Healing Transitions have worked hand-in-hand to create a seamless bridge between crisis stabilization and long-term recovery. This partnership has become a vital connection point for individuals seeking hope, stability, and sustained recovery support.

HT's mission is to provide innovative peer-based, recovery-oriented services to homeless, uninsured and underserved individuals in Wake County. We partner together by dually referring clients — Healing Transitions referrs individuals to Freedom House for crisis stabilization, and we refer clients for their long-term recovery program.

This partnership exemplifies what’s possible when organizations unite around a shared purpose: restoring health, dignity, and hope. We’re deeply honored that Healing Transitions recognized this collaboration by naming Freedom House Recovery Center its Community Partner of the Year (December 2024) and nominating us for the Fred Barber Legacy Award (September 2025).

Together, we’re building a stronger, more compassionate continuum of care for those on the journey to recovery. Thank you, , for your commitment and your partnership!

"Recovery doesn’t end after the crisis - in fact, that's often where the journey begins.

Lasting recovery is most successful when individuals are surrounded by community and connection. Recovery housing provides this safety, structure, and belonging — giving people the foundation to rebuild their lives, find purpose, and thrive.

Valerie, one of our valued Certified Peer Support Specialist, is committed to walking alongside our clients on thier road to recovery.

We are so grateful for Valerie's commitment to serve the community in this way. Here's how Valerie captures the heart of our mantra: no matter who, no matter what, no matter when.

""To me, it expresses unwavering commitment, inclusivity, and consistency. We at FHRC serve all people equally, regardless of their background, identity, status and/or beliefs. No discrimination. We offer support and services to anyone in need.

We are consistent in our dedication to purpose through all challenges, obstacles, or circumstances. We are available and ready to act at any time. We are committed to delivering compassionate care — no matter who you are, no matter what you’re going through, and no matter when you need us.""

Valerie is inspired by the wisdom of women who have also served their community, namely Rosa Parks and Maya Angelou. Thank you, Valerie, for your dedication and living out our values through your care every single day.

Thank you to our Person County Outpatient Clinic and the Freedom House team for taking time to attend community events to promote recovery and distribute resources to our neighbors.

This is the heart of showing up ""no matter who, no matter what, no matter when"" — going into the community rather than waiting for the community to come to us.

For Heather, one of our Senior Executives and a long-time Freedom House employee, No Matter Who, No Matter What, No Matter When is about more than services, it’s about creating community.

“To me, it means we welcome people in need of life-saving support not only into services, but into an entire supportive community for as long as they choose to stay engaged. It means accepting and helping people who need a safety net when barriers like low/no income, isolation, or significant symptoms may keep them from accessing services elsewhere. It also means working hard as a team every day to keep a full array of support available so our clients find no wrong door for entering into recovery.”

Thank you, Heather, for embodying these values and ensuring that recovery is always accessible, welcoming, and barrier-free!

Stay tuned as more of our staff share what no matter who, what, and when means to them.

If you're signed up for our newsletter, you heard a piece of Shawn Armstrong's reflection on our mantra. Here's how he describes the meaning of ""no matter who, no matter what, no matter when"" to him personally:

""During my experiences here at Freedom House over the past 17 years in my personal and professional life, I feel that 'no matter who' has been a great way to help those in the community who need our help, regardless of their race, political affiliations, or religious beliefs.

'No matter what' shows that, regardless of what may have caused a crisis — whether environment, life experiences, or lack of judgment — the goal is to step in, help, and support those who are ready to make a change.

Finally, 'No matter when,' I’ve learned that providing support and assistance can happen at any time and at any age. People learn patience with age; they learn to make better choices after a crisis or major setback. No one knows when a life-changing event will occur or the major setbacks it can bring—mentally and physically. Most importantly, most won't know how to respond to those struggles, regardless of when they experience them.""

Thank you, Shawn, for so meaningfully articulating the passion behind these shared values. We're grateful for all you do for our clients and our mission!
