UNC Biological & Biomedical Sciences Program

UNC Biological & Biomedical Sciences Program We encourage applications from students with either a biological or physical sciences background.

The Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program is a unified mechanism by which prospective students apply for graduate study in the biological or biomedical sciences at UNC Chapel Hill. BBSP students are fully funded and admitted with no formal commitment to a PhD program until they choose their thesis labs. Students are free to explore any courses and faculty that interest them during the first academic year. During the first year BBSP students are also part of small, interest based groups led by faculty members. These groups provide professional development and community for students until they join one of the 14 different member PhD programs. In addition to the degree programs, UNC has a number of Specialized Training Tracks that provide focused training in areas of particular strength among our faculty. The BBSP program will begin accepting applications for Fall 2014 admissions in August when the UNC Graduate School opens the online application. The deadline for completed application materials is December 3, 2013. You can find detailed information on our program on our website:

Brian Petersen (Neurobiology Curriculum, works primarily in the Dohlman lab - but also with the Elston Lab for a computational perspective. "They're both yeast labs which makes me the worlds leading (and only) yeast neurobiologist." )
How does your lab have fun?
“The Dohlman Lab works with a yeast model so some brew beer and others bake bread. I spend my time outside the lab with my wife and kids, riding motorcycles, and building strange contraptions.”

Our weather this week is a little more "exciting" than usual, and flight cancellations all up and down the eastern half of the country disrupted our plans for interview weekend #4. We're rescheduling those applicants as soon as we can, and the snow should all be melted by the weekend.

2400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 5 miles, 1 hour. The mantra of the Krispy Kreme Challenge epitomizes the test of physical fitness and gastrointestinal fortitude. All joking aside, there's no shortage of outdoor activities in and around Chapel Hill, including lots of races.

The 10th Annual Krispy Kreme Challenge will be February 8, 2014 at 8:30 AM. Register for your spot today! All proceeds from the Krispy Kreme Challenge are donated to the NC Children's Hospital. Read more
