🚨 Groundbreaking Protocol Published by UNC Researchers!
The UNC Center for Animal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CAMRI) has unveiled a pioneering protocol that integrates electrochemical brain recordings with MRI imaging—a major step forward for neuroscience research and future clinical applications.
This innovation, co-authored by Dr. Tatiana Shnitko and her team, provides a roadmap for combining fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) with MRI, enabling near real-time chemical and structural brain data collection.
🧠 New UNC Study Sheds Light on Alzheimer’s Disease
Researchers at the UNC School of Medicine have uncovered how Alzheimer’s impacts both memory and mood—two symptoms that profoundly affect patients and families.
The study, led by Dr. Juan Song and published in Neuron, identified two distinct brain circuits in the supramammillary nucleus (SuM) that separately control memory and emotional responses. When these circuits malfunction in Alzheimer’s, patients experience cognitive decline alongside anxiety and depression.
Excitingly, scientists were able to restore memory or mood in Alzheimer’s-model mice by selectively activating these pathways. This breakthrough opens the door to personalized, circuit-based therapies that could improve quality of life by targeting both symptoms at once.
A new study published in Neuron, led by Juan Song, PhD, sheds light on how Alzheimer’s disease affects the brain. The findings could lead to new forms of therapy.

🎉 We’re thrilled to share that Dr. Clio Rubinos has received the Annual Zeto Clinical Trial Sponsorship for her groundbreaking work in Zambia!
Together with Dr. Saylor and Dr. LaRoche, Dr. Rubinos will lead the PRECISE-Z Study, an innovative project exploring the use of continuous EEG to improve seizure and status epilepticus care in critically ill patients.
This marks one of the first continuous EEG studies ever conducted in a low- to middle-income country, and it’s a major step toward improving access to advanced neurodiagnostic tools worldwide.
👏 Join us in congratulating this incredible team for their pioneering achievement!
Dr. Clio Rubinos receives the Zeto Clinical Trial Sponsorship for the PRECISE-Z Study, pioneering continuous EEG implementation in Zambia to improve seizure and status epilepticus care in low-resource settings.
A pilot study of the COMA-F program shows promising results in reducing emotional distress and improving coping skills among caregivers of ICU survivors with severe brain injury, paving the way for a larger clinical trial.
