Phases of a migraine attack 🤯
•
1️⃣ Prodrome
This pre-migraine phase, which occurs hours or even days before the onset of an attack, often serves as a warning that a headache is coming. Possible symptoms include:
> Food Cravings
> Constipation or Diarrhea
> Increased duration of urination
> Mood swings
> Muscle stiffness
> fatigue
(In some cases, with the correct treatment plan, a full blown attack can be averted during prodrome with your abortive medications)
2️⃣Aura
The word “Aura” refers to the feelings, visual disturbances, neurological and other symptoms that precede the headache phase, which begins approx. 5 to 60 minutes before the actual headache occurs. The aura phase can also be a warning sign of an oncoming attack. Symptoms include:
> Visual Effects (flashing lights, wavy lines, spots, partial loss of vision, blurred vision)
> Smelling odors that don’t exist
> Tingling or numbness
> Speech or Hearing difficulties
> Partial Paralysis
> Reduced sensation or hypersensitivity to touch
(Not all migraine patients go through this phase. As a matter of fact, migraine WITHOUT Aura is the most common form of migraine)
3️⃣ Headache
This phase is the most incapacitating part of a migraine attack, affecting the whole body. Pain ranges from mild to severe. Intense pain, which usually awakens the patient in the early hours of the morning lasting 4-72 hours. Symptoms may include:
> Unilateral pain
> Pain occurring around the eyes, sinuses and jaw
> Pain that is worsened by physical activity
> Increased sensitivity to light, sound and odors
> Neck pain
> Nausea and/or Vomiting
> Nasal congestion or runny nose
> Dizziness or Vertigo
(Again, not every patient goes through this phase. It is possible to suffer from migraine but not physically experiencing the headache pain)
4️⃣ Postdrome
This is most commonly referred to patients as the “hang over” phase. Post headache or recovery can last for hours or even days, which can be an effect of the medication taken during the attack or the headache itself. Symptoms include:
> Feeling of depression, well-being or Euphoria
> Fatigue
> Reduced ability to concentrate and lowered comprehension
•
If episode migraineur, a patient may have multiple headache free days between postdrome and the predrome phase of the next attack. Chronic migraineurs are not that lucky.Predrome of the next attack most often times can start back to back with postdrome phase of last attack.
