Balancing Stones Yoga

Balancing Stones Yoga Nancy (500 RYT) teaches Hatha Yoga for all bodies, Yoga for Osteoporosis and Yoga for Runners. Osteoporosis is a silent killer. MD, B Phil.

I have been practicing yoga since 1990 and received my 500 RYT in February, 2021. I am a scientist by training, and follow science backed methods of applying Yoga to improving health. My passion is to share the health benefits of Yoga Asana practice as well as to apply Yoga poses to the prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis. Strengthening your bones is a way to prevent bone loss as we age, as well as to increase bone density in those with osteoporosis. Yoga practice works as well or better than the medicines used to reverse osteoporosis in the commonly fractured sites (spine, hip and femur). I teach the poses using props such a chairs, blocks and straps, to promote good alignment and strength for all bodies and abilities. The 12 poses are part of a science-backed routine to increase bone density in the spine, hip and femur. Primary reference:

As many of you know, The Ramsay Hunt Syndrome Foundation has been dear to my heart, as this disease has been my lived experience. I hope that you will consider contributing to the Foundation so that we can expand our reach supporting patients and education health care professionals. Check out who is on our board and don't forget your shingles vaccine!!

RHSF is excited to take part in on December 2, 2025, joining millions around the world in a day dedicated to kindness and generosity. This year, we are launching our "Face Forward in 2026 with RHSF" campaign with a simple, meaningful goal: raise $2,026 to fuel our mission of supporting and empowering the Ramsay Hunt syndrome community.

Every dollar helps us provide trusted information, real support, and hope to those navigating RHS. Little by little, together, we can make a big impact!

Please mark your calendars and join us in giving back.

Pauses help your students sense, integrate, and understand what is happening in their bodies. They turn movement into learning and effort into awareness.

When you teach, invite spaciousness. A breath. A moment. A chance for your students to notice. That is often where the real change happens.

Q: Why have you suddenly advised people to divide their yoga for osteoporosis practice in two, separating the halves by 8 hours or more?

A: Several different researchers have found that the refractory period (the time osteocytes and osteoblasts need to recover from their bone-making) is about 8 hours long. Further, 72 seconds of stimulus sets these cells to work for about 30 minutes. Stimulating the cells more, e.g., by doing yoga for 20 minutes, has no effect beyond the first 72 seconds for each bone. But it still has the wonderful effects of yoga!

Of late, I have become interested in the fascia. That is the tissue that holds our bodies together; attaching muscles to bones (tendons) and letting our skin glide easily as we move and stretch. Keep your fascia moving to keep it healthy!
Here are a few yoga poses to help keep your fascia happy:

The fascial system in our bodies needs to be pliable and hydrated for healthy movement. Try these five yoga poses for myofascial release from ACE Fitness.
