Honoring the Legacy of the Original Chatham Pediatrics.

As we strive to provide a medical home for the children of Chatham County, we are inspired by the example set by Dr. James Schwankl.

Dr. Schwankl graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1969 and completed his pediatric residency at the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital. While earning his Masters of Public Health at UNC, he worked in community health centers in the rural towns of Prospect Hill and Moncure. During this time, Chatham Hospital asked Dr. Schwankl to give a presentation titled “How to recruit physicians in outlying communities.” The presentation must have been persuasive because Dr. Schwankl ended up recruiting himself to open an independent pediatric practice in Chatham County!

Dr. Schwankl established the original Chatham Pediatrics in Siler City in 1976 - when an office visit was just $8.00! He was known for his compassionate care and his commitment to serve families from all backgrounds. Dr. Schwankl served the Chatham County community for 41 years until his retirement in 2017.

We are humbled and grateful for the support that Dr. Schwankl and his wife, Anne Marie, have given us along our journey to open the new Chatham Pediatrics in 2024. We aspire to continue their mission of high quality pediatric care and community service.

We have a special visitor on loan from Chatham County Partnership for Children! Today we spotlight an American heroine, Dolly Partner and her love of learning. Come by, say hello, snap a pic and feel free to take a book.

Growing up in a one-room cabin in Sevierville, Tennessee, Dolly Parton discovered the power of books at an early age. As one of 12 children, she saw how stories could open worlds far beyond her mountain home — especially since her father never had the chance to learn to read.

That love of reading stayed with her, inspiring the creation of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which has gifted millions of books to children around the world.

For Dolly, reading isn’t just a pastime — it’s a pathway to hope, opportunity, and big dreams.

Today is National Pizza Day!

Quick Note: Gennaro Lombardi, the first Pizzeria in the United States, opened in 1895 in New York City.

Here’s an easy, hands-on pizza recipe kids will love making and eating. A great way to spend time as a family.

What you’ll need:
• English muffins, pita bread, or mini pizza crusts
• Pizza sauce (or marinara)
• Shredded mozzarella cheese
• Fun toppings: pepperoni, olives, bell peppers, mushrooms, pineapple

How to make it:
1️⃣ Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
2️⃣ Spread sauce on the crust (spoon + giggles encouraged)
3️⃣ Sprinkle cheese like you mean it
4️⃣ Decorate with toppings—faces, patterns, or “everything pizza”
5️⃣ Bake 8–10 minutes until cheese is melty and happy
6️⃣ Cool slightly… then enjoy the masterpiece!
