OA Action Alliance

OA Action Alliance A national coalition promoting effective programs, policies and communication strategies to prevent and control osteoarthritis.

The Osteoarthritis Action Alliance (OAAA) was launched in 2011 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Arthritis Foundation to realize the mission and objectives outlined in the 2010 National Public Health Agenda for Osteoarthritis. In 2014, management of the OAAA was transferred to the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We reconnected, we got social, and we're ready to take action. The OA Action Alliance strongly endorses and encourages regular physical activity, weight management, injury prevention and self-management education as proven strategies to maintain healthy joints and manage the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Living with osteoarthritis doesn’t mean you have to skip snacks. Choosing nutrient-dense options can help support overall health and may help manage inflammation.

Try snacks that combine fiber, healthy fats, and protein to keep you satisfied and support joint health. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, yogurt, and whole grains are great choices to keep on hand.

Small, balanced snacks throughout the day can help fuel your body and support your arthritis management plan.

Stretching can help keep joints flexible and reduce stiffness for people living with osteoarthritis. Gentle stretches may improve range of motion, support joint function, and make everyday movement easier. Try incorporating a few simple stretches into your daily routine, especially in the morning or after physical activity when joints may feel tight.

Start slowly, move within a comfortable range, and stop if you feel sharp pain. Even a few minutes of stretching each day can help support joint health.

Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a significant public health concern, particularly for athletes and individuals in physically demanding careers. While we often focus on the immediate recovery from a joint injury the long-term metabolic and mechanical changes in the joint can lead to the premature onset of OA.

Key takeaways for long-term joint health:

1️⃣Early Intervention: Proper rehabilitation after an initial injury is critical to restoring joint stability.

2️⃣Movement as Medicine: Strengthening the muscles around the joint reduces the load on the cartilage.

3️⃣Awareness: Recognizing early signs—like persistent swelling or stiffness—can lead to better management outcomes.

Let’s shift the conversation from "recovering from an injury" to "preserving joint health for life."

Did you know what you eat may help support joint health? The Mediterranean diet focuses on whole, nutrient-rich foods that may help reduce inflammation and support overall health for people living with osteoarthritis.

Why it may help:
- Rich in anti-inflammatory nutrients
- High in antioxidants
- Supports heart health and healthy weight
- May help reduce joint pain and improve function

Small changes can make a difference. Try adding more plant-based foods and using olive oil in place of butter.
