Hello Health Focus! Welcome back to our new and revamped Facebook :'))
To all of the incoming freshman and transfer students who have expressed interest in our club – welcome to Carolina! For those of you who are returning members or simply hope to become more involved in Health Focus during the upcoming semester, we hope you are doing well while navigating the shift to remote learning.
As many of you know, Health Focus is committed to educating the community about public health, which is especially important as we continue to battle the difficulties put forth by COVID-19. In the past, we volunteered at a local elementary school where we taught children about health and well-being. This is not possible during the upcoming semester, but we have developed two ways in which members can continue to volunteer and contribute to public health education:
Option I: The Integrative Scope The Integrative Scope (www.theintegrativescope.com) was recently created by two Health Focus members, and functions as an online forum that details the intersections between integrative medicine, public health, and humanitarian perspectives. Health Focus members can publish interviews, reflections, and experiences with integrative medicine on an online forum – this would be a great opportunity to develop connections with physicians and public health professionals remotely (and also a simple way to become published as an undergraduate student!).
Option II: Health Focus Remote Education We are planning to create a video series that we can send to elementary, middle, and high school students that educate them about public health topics. These videos will work similarly to a remote class at UNC. Health focus members can collaborate to create a 15-minute presentation that could be sent to various student audiences.
The Health Focus board will be meeting early next week to discuss these opportunities at greater depth for our members. We will most likely be conducting a virtual general body meeting to establish expectations for members within the next few weeks after students have settled into their class schedules. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Be on the lookout for future emails with more in-depth information about volunteer opportunities and feel free to message us with any questions!
