→ NC AHEC directly supported 1,083 primary care, specialty or behavioral health medical practices across 99 counties, including helping with managing new payment models and health care reforms, while also enhancing quality and reducing costs.
→ NC AHEC provided over 50,000 library services to health care workers from 83 counties, including performing literature searches, lending documents, and answering reference questions.
→ The NC Center on the Workforce for Health, a recent addition to NC AHEC, supported 7 AHEC regions to prepare or operationalize regional employer-led collaboratives to define and respond to local health workforce priorities, coordinated the state agency efforts to align health workforce initiatives, and is now recognized as the state’s nursing workforce center.

In October, Eastern AHEC and the NC Health Talent Alliance brought together area healthcare leaders, educators, and community partners from Currituck to Carteret and Onslow to Dare counties for the region's first-ever Healthcare Workforce Employer Collaboratives. Their purpose? To discuss ways to tackle an urgent issue -- building and sustaining a strong healthcare workforce in Eastern NC.

“Our healthcare employers are facing ongoing challenges in recruiting and retaining skilled professionals, particularly in rural and coastal communities,” said Kathy Russell, Regional Healthcare Workforce Manager at Eastern AHEC. The Collaboratives allowed participants to co-create strategies to address challenges such as noncompetitive salaries, limited remote work opportunities, and fewer pathways for career advancement, and discuss innovative ways to grow healthcare talent locally.

Understanding the regional workforce needs and developing targeted programs to address identified needs is the focus of the NC Health Talent Alliance (NC HTA) – a strategic partnership between the NC Center on the Workforce for Health, NC Chamber Foundation, and NC AHEC regions aimed at addressing pervasive healthcare worker shortages in North Carolina.

“By bringing employers, educators, and stakeholders to the same table, we are ensuring that solutions are not only innovative and sustainable, but also responsive to the real needs of our local communities -- together.” said Bryan Spence, Regional Healthcare Workforce Manager at Eastern AHEC.

This is just the beginning of good and meaningful conversations about creating job-ready, credentialed workforces that reflect the communities they serve. To learn more and get involved, visit workforceforhealth.org/hta.

The health care landscape is ever-changing—and we help practices keep up. Over 1,300 practices across North Carolina are supported by NC AHEC Practice Support coaches—experts who provide tailored guidance on a wide range of critical topics. In a recent survey, 100% of respondents said they would recommend the service to other providers.

One practice in Wake County said “Our AHEC coach is incredibly proactive, helpful, and guides us to seek the best solutions for our practice. She understands the challenges of an independent medical practice and provides practical, relevant guidance and information. We would not have been able to get the CoCM capacity-building grant or the NCHIE Social Needs Pilot grant without her support.”
