Somiya Mehrotra was attending a lunch to celebrate her mother-in-law's retirement when she collapsed unexpectedly, leading to her being rushed to the hospital and placed into a coma. When she awoke from the coma 13 days later, Somiya was informed that she had experienced a stroke.

Coming out of the coma was only the beginning of Somiya's recovery journey. The stroke had caused her to develop aphasia, a condition that affects the survivor's ability to speak. But, even though she couldn't communicate through language, Somiya adapted and found other ways to connect with others without using speech. Now she is continuing to pursue recovery by participating in speech and physical therapy. Read Somiya's full story here: https://bit.ly/44uwpWA

Join us tomorrow (12/2/2025) for a FREE presentation for brain injury survivors, caregivers, and family members! Hosted via Zoom at 10:00am EDT. For questions call 803-731-9823 or e-mail Mike at michael@biaofsc.com

After a brain injury, survivors initially experience an influx of love and support from family, friends, and co-workers. Once a brain injury survivor is medically stable, less support is seen from co-workers, acquaintances, and friends.

Over time, more distance commonly grows between a survivor and his/her partner, children, co-workers, and friends. This distance occurs due to the personality, cognitive, communication, and mental health changes after a brain injury.

This presentation will provide evidence for the emotional, cognitive, and personality changes that occur after brain injury in order to illuminate understanding on the importance of implementing strategies to manage the cause of the relationship strain.

Evidence based strategies to improve current and build new relationships will be provided. Participants will leave with a toolkit of strategies for mitigating relationship strain and allow for gaining supportive and collaborative relationships.

🧠Peaceful Pause and Mindfulness for Brain Injury Survivors🙏

Working with Symptoms (fatigue, pain, frustration, overload)

> When your brain feels tired or overloaded, where do you first notice it in your body?

> What’s one small thing that sometimes helps your brain or body feel a little calmer?

> If “overwhelm” had a shape, color, or texture today, what would it be?

> Can we give this tired/overwhelmed feeling some space, like placing it on a shelf for a few breaths?

Our one-hour class is gentle and safe for people with brain injuries. There’s no pressure at all. We will sit quietly and notice our breath and body in an easy way. We might share one word about how we feel (like “tired” or “calm”), but only if you want to. We’ll practice being kind to ourselves with simple questions like “What would you say to a friend who feels like you do today?” You can keep your eyes open, rest, or move whenever you need. Most people leave feeling a bit calmer and nicer to themselves.

Today we are incredibly proud to celebrate two remarkable men who embody resilience, service, and heart.

We’re honored to share that Ernie Massaro was recently recognized by U.S. Congressman Ralph Norman for his outstanding service and advocacy. The certificate presented by Congressman Norman is a well-deserved testament to the impact Ernie has on veterans, survivors, and families throughout our state.

Thank you, Ernie, for your military service, for surviving and thriving after brain injury, and for continuing to serve others with grace and purpose. We are so grateful you’re part of our team.

Our Veteran Outreach Coordinator, Mike Simmons, is a proud U.S. Army Veteran and one of the most dedicated advocates for brain injury survivors in South Carolina. With deep respect for those who have served and a genuine passion for helping veterans and families navigate life after brain injury, he is the steady voice and guiding hand so many rely on at the Brain Injury Association of South Carolina. We are grateful every day for his service – both in uniform and in our mission.
