Missing, Wanting and Needing - Day #38
When your grief is new, all you can feel is the emptiness; the missing, the wanting, and the needing to see them one more time. There is truly a vacuum in your heart and life; a deeply empty space, and you’re sure nothing will ever fill the void.

And, for a long time, nothing does. In fact, I don’t think it’s a process of filling the space, but rather one where the space shrinks ever smaller. It doesn’t go away all together, but it will become less through time.

Quotation for the Day
"The problem with death is absence." ~ Roger Rosenblatt

Anniversaries - Day #37
It’s the little things that can “trip you up” along your journey through grief. The songs, the smells…and the special days you shared with your loved one.

I remember one day in the grocery store quite clearly. My mother has been gone for 19 years, and I rarely come back to that grieving place around the loss. But, as I walked the aisle, a Patsy Cline song came over the speakers…one she used to cry over. And, guess what? I found myself crying for her all over again - despite the intervening years.

You can’t be prepared for those unexpected moments. You just have to roll with them, like the surging waves along the shore. But you can prepare for the anniversaries and what I call the “high holy days” of the relationship: birthdays, Valentine’s Day, or the day you met.

Plan to do something unique to mark the day - a ritual of love to further cement the bond between you.

"Ah, woe is me! Winter is come and gone,
But grief returns with the revolving year." ~ Percy Bysshe Shelly

Peace - Day #35
For me, it’s tending my African violets. Or creating a stained glass window. What is it you love to do? Perhaps it’s been a long time since you’ve taken the time to get busy with something you enjoy: cooking, gardening, or other outdoor activity. Whatever you did, do it again. Even if it’s just for 30 minutes. You’ll find great peace in doing so.

Quotation for the Day
"Great peace is found in little busy-ness." ~ Chaucer

Bridges - Day #34
A friend of mine lost his wife, after a long, long illness. He cared for her every day, and the habit of caring for her was deeply engrained into his being. It was the loss of that connection, that day-to-day caring, which caused him the most pain.

For him, the mundane activities of caring for her dying body were the bridge of love between them. After she was gone, he rebuilt the bridge by creating and tending an honor garden, filled with her favorite flowers. “She’s with me, in her garden. I feel her presence very strongly,” he said to me one day.

And I believed him.
Where can you feel the closeness?

Quotation for the Day
"There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning." ~ Thornton Wilder

Refuge - Day #33
Reaching out to those in need with love can be the best way to heal the wound of grief. It’s your capacity to love that is your saving grace - it’s a divine gift, meant to be shared.
Look for opportunities to make a difference in someone else’s life today - and act on at least one. You will sleep better tonight, knowing you did.

Quotation for the Day
"I am slowly, painfully discovering that my refuge is not found in my mother, or my grandmother, or even the birds of Bear River. My refuge exists in my capacity to love." ~ Terry T. Williams

Rebirth - Day #32
It’s easy to see that one does not go through the process of grieving and remain unchanged. Through it all, you are growing, ever changing – but only if you are open to the rich possibilities that await you on the “other side.” Let me ask you - can you see who you will become? Are you happy with what you see? If not, you’ve got the means to grow in the direction you wish.

Loss often makes people bitter, and angry. Is that how you want to be? I don’t think so.
Rather than hanging on to bitterness, resentment or anger - let go, and find a healthier place to live the remainder of your days.

Quotation for the Day
“Out of every crisis comes the chance to be reborn, to choose the kind of change that will help us to grow and fulfill ourselves more completely." ~ Nena O’Neill

Solidarity with All Humanity - Day #31
Everyone has lost, or will lose, someone they love. The sense of solidarity which comes with the recognition of this fact is powerful. The fine gifts of understanding, empathy and love are rich rewards for the sufferings of grief.

No matter the color of our skin, the country of our birth, we are all one humanity. For that, I am deeply grateful.

Quotation for the Day
"After the dead are buried, after the physical pain of grief has become a permanent wound in the soul, then comes the transcendent and common bond of human suffering, and with that comes forgiveness, and with forgiveness comes love." ~ Andre Dubus
