A Holiday Season to Remember - Last November, Inpatient Rehabilitation Case Manager Kim Burris, RN was preparing to undergo heart transplant surgery. It was, she hoped, the end of a life-long journey that started when she was just three days old and undergoing her first open heart surgery.

"I chose healthcare as a career in large part because hospitals have always been a part of my life. I've seen how compassionate care helped patients during their darkest hours.

I knew at a young age I wanted to be a part of a group of people dedicated to helping others heal, just as countless doctors and nurses helped me. And, I found that group when I joined Trident six years ago."

Recognizing this is her first Christmas with a new heart, Kim said she's enjoying celebrating family gatherings and going to see holiday light shows.

Her recovery is going well. "My colleagues in Inpatient Rehabilitation are a constant source of encouragement. It's great to start a new chapter in creating new holiday memories."

A Holiday Season to Remember - Less than 24 hours after receiving a new heart valve, 86-year-old Gene Corvino was kissed by his wife of more than 60 years and posed with his family with a smile that said he knows this holiday will be special.

Gene underwent the 500th minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure at HCA Healthcare Trident Hospital. Tests revealed a reduction in his blood flow was affecting his breathing and causing prolonged fatigue. During the TAVR procedure a new aortic valve is placed using a thin tube into an artery to guide the valve to the heart.

Less than 24 hours after the procedure, Gene said he could already breathe easier and walk longer with more energy.

In the upcoming days, Gene and his wife will start celebrating this season of thanks and giving with nearly 30 family members. One is a member of our Trident Hospital family, daughter-in-law Michelle Corvino, RDCS, Lead Teach, Echo Team.

The heart of Trident Health is found in our more than 3,000 employees. Pictured are members of our Trident Breast Care Center team who daily care for, comfort and encourage women in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. We are motivated to serve. More than half of South Carolina’s Lowcountry residents live in Trident Health’s primary market. To our more than 700,000 friends and neighbors in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties “thank you” for allowing us to care for you.

This year we celebrate 45 years of providing acute healthcare services to families in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Services are provided through our two acute care hospitals, Trident Medical Center and Summerville Medical Center; two freestanding emergency departments, Moncks Corner Medical Center and Centre Pointe Emergency; and two urgent care centers, CareNow Urgent Care - Goose Creek and CareNow Urgent Care - North Charleston. In July 2020 we will open our third freestanding emergency department - Brighton Park ER, which is located near the entrance to Nexton.

Both Trident and Summerville Medical Centers have received top ranking as Joint Commission Top Hospitals for Quality Performance and are Joint Commission Certified for Advanced Heart Failure and Advanced Primary Stroke Centers. Trident Medical Center is also a Trauma Center. Our trauma specialists cared for more than 2,000 trauma patients in 2019.
