Beam Signing Celebration for HCA Healthcare Johns Island ER - We expect to open Johns Island’s first ER in the Fall. At today’s event we were encouraged by the words of support from attendees.

Providing residents of Johns Island quick access to emergency care is especially critical considering the impact traffic delays have on getting off the island quickly when there’s a medical emergency.

When HCA Healthcare Johns Island ER opens it will be staffed by doctors who are certified in emergency medicine. The 12-bed facility will also include Imaging and Lab services.

It’s located on Maybank Highway, directly across from KISS Cafe, 1802 Crowne Commons Way.

Thank you to Charleston City Councilman Jim McBride and representatives from the Johns Island Council and Sea Islands Chamber of Commerce for attending today’s event.

It was a pleasure to have WCIV | ABC News 4 anchor Tessa Spencer visit our hospital. And, during this Heart Month, she was able to talk with advanced heart failure specialist Michael Craig, MD, HCA Healthcare Heart Failure Clinic.

"One thing I learned from Dr. Craig was how important it is for patients with heart disease to have an advocate. Changing a lifetime of habits is difficult, especially for adults. That's where a loved one or trusted friend can help.

"It may be frustrating at times, but I encourage caregivers, whether family or friends, to love them, lead them to help, but don't leave them if they struggle. The rewards of a long successful journey are things that make life worth living."

❤️ National Wear Red Day

Today, dozens of female physicians, leaders, and nurses from across HCA Healthcare in the Lowcountry came together—bringing our hearts and our hands—to help build a home and strengthen community alongside our partners at Dorchester Habitat for Humanity.

Each year, on the first Friday in February volunteers supporting the American Heart Association - South Carolina National Wear Red Day, join to raise awareness of women’s heart disease and stroke risks.

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death among women.

As Dr. Jane Appleby, Chief Medical Officer shared, “When I think of heart, I think of community. I think of joy, kindness, and compassion. Today, it’s an honor for us to give back to our community.”

A heartfelt thank you to our colleagues from HCA Healthcare Trident Hospital, HCA Healthcare Summerville Hospital, HCA Healthcare Colleton Hospital, and the HCA Healthcare South Atlantic Division for living out our mission through service.

Together, we build more than homes—we build hope, health, and community. ❤️

Please join us in congratulating electrophysiologist Frank Cuoco, MD with Charleston Heart Specialists. Yesterday, nearly 2,000 heart specialists attending the 31st AF Symposium in Boston watched as he live streamed a case from HCA Healthcare Trident Hospital.

The procedure showed that a treatment called pulse field ablation (PFA) can be done safely in a patient who already has a Watchman™ heart device. The patent was able to safely return home only a few hours after the procedure.

The Watchman device helps protect patients from strokes. Doctors wanted to see if PFA could be used safely after this device is already in place.

“This case helps answer questions doctors see every day,” said Dr. Cuoco. “More patients are getting Watchman devices earlier, so we need to know how new treatments work with them.”

Pulse field ablation is a newer way to treat atrial fibrillation, or AFib. It uses short electrical pulses to fix heart rhythm problems while helping protect nearby heart tissue.

During the live procedure, viewers could see how Dr. Cuoco planned the treatment, used special imaging tools, and made sure the patient stayed safe. Doctors watching the case asked questions in real time.

The live video showed how technology can help doctors learn from each other, even when they are far apart.

The successful case showed that pulse field ablation can be a safe option for patients with more complex heart conditions.

The 2026 AFib Symposium brings together doctors, researchers, and medical companies to share new ideas and improve care for people with AFib.

Our Story

The heart of Trident Health is found in our more than 3,000 employees. Pictured are members of our Trident Breast Care Center team who daily care for, comfort and encourage women in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. We are motivated to serve. Driven to compassionately provide the highest quality of care. And reminded daily of our mission - Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.

More than half of South Carolina’s Lowcountry residents live in Trident Health’s primary market. To our more than 700,000 friends and neighbors in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties “thank you” for allowing us to care for you.

This year we celebrate 45 years of providing acute healthcare services to families in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Services are provided through our two acute care hospitals, Trident Medical Center and Summerville Medical Center; two freestanding emergency departments, Moncks Corner Medical Center and Centre Pointe Emergency; and two urgent care centers, CareNow Urgent Care - Goose Creek and CareNow Urgent Care - North Charleston. In July 2020 we will open our third freestanding emergency department - Brighton Park ER, which is located near the entrance to Nexton.

Both Trident and Summerville Medical Centers have received top ranking as Joint Commission Top Hospitals for Quality Performance and are Joint Commission Certified for Advanced Heart Failure and Advanced Primary Stroke Centers. Trident Medical Center is also a Trauma Center. Our trauma specialists cared for more than 2,000 trauma patients in 2019.
