🧠 WVU Research Alert 🚨
New findings from reveal a critical factor in overdose deaths: men are 2–3x more likely to die from unintentional overdoses than women, and alcohol may be a key reason why.

🔍 Researchers, lead by Health Affairs Institute’s Dr. Zheng Dai, found that while men and women use illicit substances at similar rates, men are more likely to combine alcohol with drugs like fentanyl, intensifying the risk of fatal overdose due to compounded respiratory depression.

📊 In West Virginia alone, over 75% of overdose deaths involving alcohol and another substance were men.
💬 “People often don’t realize alcohol and opioids can have the same harmful effect on the body,” said Zheng Dai, lead researcher.
