Highways, Hills, & Health Centers 🛣️ ⛰️ 🏥
This month, WVPCA’s School-Based Health Director, Carolyn Canini teamed up with Cynthia Sorsaia, Communities In Schools Coordinator at the West Virginia Department of Education, for a visit to Capital High School (CHS) in Kanawha County.
Together, they toured FamilyCare Health Centers - WV's school-based health clinic and the Cougar Community Closet—a collaborative resource room led by CHS’s social worker and Communities In Schools. Both are located inside the school, making it easier for students to access care and support without missing valuable class time.
At CHS, providers and site coordinators work hand-in-hand. A student can see a healthcare provider for a medical need and, in the same day, be connected with resources for food, clothing, utilities, or housing—all without leaving campus. This seamless approach ensures both physical health and social needs are addressed so students can focus on learning and success.
Across West Virginia, 289 schools have Communities In Schools site coordinators, many of which also partner with School-Based Health Centers. Together, these programs play a vital role in helping students thrive—whether by providing healthcare, tutoring, counseling, clothing, or family engagement resources.
📚💙 By meeting students where they are, these partnerships break down barriers and create pathways to brighter futures.
