Supporting and Treating the Addiction-Impacted Family: A Cross-Sector Endeavor in Parkersburg, WV

This month, WVPCA’s Director of School-Based and Behavioral Health Services, Carolyn Canini, joined behavioral health providers from Coplin Health Systems for Supporting and Treating the Addiction-Impacted Family: A Cross Sector Endeavor.

Hosted by Coplin Health Systems and the Office of the Public Defender Fourth Judicial Circuit, in partnership with the Opioid Response Network (ORN), the event brought together experts and community leaders to share insights on treating substance use disorders, supporting pregnant and parenting families, and improving coordination across health, legal, and recovery systems.

One of the most powerful moments was the “In Their Own Words” fishbowl discussion—an open conversation with local residents who courageously shared their lived experiences in recovery and interactions with the justice and child protective systems. Their stories highlighted both the challenges and opportunities for systems to work together toward better outcomes for families.

A heartfelt thank you to Coplin Health Systems, the Office of the Public Defender, and ORN for hosting this impactful event. 💙

If your health center is interested in organizing similar trainings tailored to your community, visit opioidresponsenetwork.org

🎗️ October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️

Breast cancer touches families across West Virginia, and early detection can save lives.

📊 Did you know?

🩷Nearly 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
🩷In WV, over 32% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed late — at a regional or distant stage.
🩷More than 1 in 4 WV women age 40+ haven’t had a mammogram in the past two years.

That’s why raising awareness and increasing access to screenings is so important.

✅ This October, WVPCA and our Community Health Centers are encouraging women across the Mountain State:
✔️ Schedule your mammogram
✔️ Talk to your provider about your risk
✔️ Remind your loved ones to get screened

Together, we can make a difference. 💗

Highways, Hills, & Health Centers 🛣️ ⛰️ 🏥

This month, WVPCA’s School-Based Health Director, Carolyn Canini teamed up with Cynthia Sorsaia, Communities In Schools Coordinator at the West Virginia Department of Education, for a visit to Capital High School (CHS) in Kanawha County.

Together, they toured FamilyCare Health Centers - WV's school-based health clinic and the Cougar Community Closet—a collaborative resource room led by CHS’s social worker and Communities In Schools. Both are located inside the school, making it easier for students to access care and support without missing valuable class time.

At CHS, providers and site coordinators work hand-in-hand. A student can see a healthcare provider for a medical need and, in the same day, be connected with resources for food, clothing, utilities, or housing—all without leaving campus. This seamless approach ensures both physical health and social needs are addressed so students can focus on learning and success.

Across West Virginia, 289 schools have Communities In Schools site coordinators, many of which also partner with School-Based Health Centers. Together, these programs play a vital role in helping students thrive—whether by providing healthcare, tutoring, counseling, clothing, or family engagement resources.

📚💙 By meeting students where they are, these partnerships break down barriers and create pathways to brighter futures.
