Does My Family Member Need Guardianship?

Before taking a step as significant and permanent as guardianship, it’s important to explore ALL available options. Alternatives like Supported Decision-Making (SDM) can empower individuals with disabilities to make their own choices while still receiving the guidance they need.

What is Supported Decision-Making?

It’s a way for individuals with disabilities to make decisions with help from trusted people like family or friends.
• Promotes independence and respects each person’s dignity and preferences
• Is less restrictive than guardianship
• Is tailored to the specific support needs of the individual

Why is it important?
• Helps families make informed choices
• Encourages independence and confidence for individuals with disabilities
• Provides alternatives to guardianship that support lifelong inclusion and self-determination

We are proud to have collaborated on SCSupportedDecisionMaking.org — a resource hub full of tools, examples, and guidance to help families understand and use Supported Decision-Making in South Carolina.

Let’s work together to empower independence and respect for all!
