By now, you’ve likely heard all about BPA — the “everywhere”

chemical that is linked to hormone disruption and health issues like heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity, infertility, immune system suppression, and cancer.

According to NHANES data from 2003–2004, BPA was found in roughly 93% of people tested. More recent data show that while BPA levels have decreased, its replacements — BPS and BPF — have taken their place.

While it’s impossible to avoid ALL bisphenol exposure, we can lower our exposure — a worthwhile goal considering that the health effects tend to have stronger associations with higher levels of exposure.

Here are 3 simple and effective ways to lower avoidable BPA exposure in your daily life:

1️⃣ Cut back on plastic use that comes into contact with food.
Switch to glass, stainless steel, or silicone for food storage and water bottles. Avoid microwaving plastic containers, as heat can cause BPA to leach into your food.

2️⃣ Minimize canned foods.
Nearly all canned goods use BPA (or other bisphenols) in their linings, which migrates into the food. Opt for fresh, frozen, dried, or foods packaged in glass jars when possible. This one can be hard — so just do your best.

3️⃣ Decline receipts.
Thermal paper receipts are often coated with BPA (or its replacements). If you don’t need a receipt, just say no or opt for email receipts if they are available.

Remember, we can’t avoid all BPA — and that’s okay. Obsessing over every possible exposure isn’t healthy either. Focus on what’s within your control, and know that even small changes can make a difference over time.

How to Spot “Cleanwashing”

In order to understand (and spot) “cleanwashing” — the marketing trend in which companies label their products as “clean,” “natural,” or “pure” to appear healthier or more sustainable than they really are — we first have to ask: What do you mean by “clean”?

First, “clean” isn’t a well-defined or regulated term, unlike “organic,” which is regulated. Without a clear definition of what “clean” means, we’re often left making assumptions.

Second, many personal care products include “free from” claims (paraben-free, phthalate-free, etc.), which can give the impression that the product is better — while still containing other questionable ingredients you might be trying to avoid. This can be confusing.

This type of marketing language is meant to appeal to people who are either looking for safer ingredients or trying to avoid specific ones — but the lack of clarity makes it tricky.

Many people also object to the idea of “clean” beauty altogether, since it positions everything else as “dirty.” This kind of binary thinking is problematic, because things are rarely that cut and dry.
